We traditionally start with Health Care Leadership—Tim Ridgway—but he truly needed a health care break—What he brings with him is not only where he has been to answer questions on college campuses---and hospitals but for those that really need the health help. Dr. Ridgway will be back with us next week.

Joining us this morning Dr. Joe Kippley---Sioux Falls Health Care----he had a little time off and we are happy is back with us today----

Dr. Kippley share your topic choices

  • Mosquito control---city-wide spray at the end of June. Continued rainfall has produced more nuisance mosquitoes, but few of the species that carry WEST NILE VIRUS
  • No mosquitoes have tested positive for WVV yet this year in the Sioux Falls AREA
  • Rural Health Transformation funding---many applications pending for healthcare and ambulance provides are South Dakota
  • Next update on STATE OPIOD funding is expected on July 20th at a legislative hearing in PIERRE

When we come back---a visit with Mary Michaels---AARP----all part of our Working on Wellness Wednesday----

9:17/30---KELO Commercials

9:19/00---Wellness Wednesday 2

We have an elite group from health care that take seriously our working on Wellness Wednesday show.

Dr. Tim Ridgway is gone this week---needed a vacation----- but once a month or so we visit with Mary Michaels----AARP-----the activities that are occurring across South Dakota--- in the streets---the homes---and medical care facilities---gives us a cause to understand that we need

The thermometer is going up over the next week. Our ability to deal with the heat changes as we age. Older adults may be more at risk in the heat, partially because of those changes in the body, but also due to the likelihood they have other chronic health problems or may be taking various medications that affect how the body handles heat. When you can’t cool yourself down, that’s when heat exhaustion can occur—dizziness, fatigues and a weak, rapid pulse. If that goes untreated, it can lead to heat stroke.

Older adults become more at risk in the heat because

  • Sweat glands become less effective with age
  • The heart has to work harder to increase blood flow and push the heat to the skin and away from the core
  • Dehydration is a factor due to a decreased sense of thirst in older adults, and more medications like diuretics draw fluid from the body. This can impact  our kidneys or worsen diabetes because dehydration makes I harder to manage blood sugars.
  • Judgment can become impaired because the brain is also impacted by heat.

How to stay Safe:

  • Check the forecast so you can make a plan. Pay attention to humidity as well
  • Know how your medications may impact your body in the heat, so talked to your health care provider
  • Try a cool shower or bath
  • Pay attention to your home’s thermostat. If your home is over 80 degrees, you need to turn on the air, use a fan, or relocated to a cooler level in your home. If you don’t have air conditioning or a cooler use a fan, or relocated to a cooler level in your home. If you don’t have air conditioning or a cooler space in your house, have a back-up plan in place like a neighbor, family member or friend, Even a church, library or mall can provide some daytime relief. If you need to stay overnight somewhere, make sure you have those arrangements in place. A community may even have a cooling center or shelter in extreme heat.
  • Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion: excessive seating, feeling faint or dizzy, muscle cramps, nausea, clammy skin. Get the person to an air conditioned space, drink water and use a cool compress or a cool shower. Monitor for any worsening symptoms.
  • Know the warning sings of heat stroke, which is an emergency and you should call 911: confusion, no sweating, body temperature above 103 degrees, nausea, loss of consciousness.

When we come back---Mike Keller will join us to talk about the Helpline Center and what it does with employers and schools after a suicide loss---that following Fox News on the half hour---

One more stop this morning----and we’re taking the advise for Tim Ridgway----who couldn’t join us this morning but had a suggestion we often use---that’s next.

9:48/00—KELO Commercials

9:51/00---Wellness Wednesday Wrap

Dr. Tim Ridgway-yes the Med School Chief and I have conversations virtually every-week about his availability to be in our Wellness Wednesday Show—I always suggest if he can’t lets have one of his Wellness World to come join us------this week I didn’t get to ask that question---however I did find someone that represents a lot of those that are going to be in charge of wellness and the health care tomorrow and beyond.

It happened by accident----as my grandson Aiden---who really adores what is grandmother and my wife Carolyn did in the health care field for so many years as quite the nurse.

Not only did she help patients---but was also a foundation for Dr. Ridgway as one of his nurses. She did help him---and now Aiden having seen and heard that---he knows she could help him starting this fall when he begins in medical courses.

Aiden was quite the football player in high school----he mows our grass for $25 a pop---and discusses so much with his Grandma Carolyn.

Carolyn is excited—his dad and mom are excited---and so am I. We will be following—we know Dr. Ridgway will be following----and he isn’t a quitter---and stands to be an asset in the medical world.

Aiden we are excited for you and your parents Grandma Carolyn and yes for Dr. Ridgway and the medical community. We hope others making a decision on what they are going to do after high school will take the same look at medicine and what they can bring to so many people.

As always It’s YOUR Business will keep you informed as the first day of college studies approach.
