------Brandon Hanson---Downtown Sioux Falls  is really defined by one thing — Burger Battle — and we are fully in it right now.

The Downtown Sioux Falls Burger Battle, brought to you by POET, runs all monthlong, and this is one of the biggest weekends for participation. Dozens of downtown restaurants are serving up their signature burger creations, and the whole idea is simple: eat burgers, explore downtown, and vote for your favorite.

What makes Burger Battle special is how it turns January into something people actually look forward to. We’re seeing friend groups planning burger crawls, coworkers turning lunch into a weekly tradition, and people discovering restaurants they’ve never been to before. When you have this many burgers — and this much variety — it keeps people coming back again and again instead of making just one stop.

From a downtown perspective, that’s exactly the point. Burger Battle spreads foot traffic across the entire district, supports locally owned restaurants, and brings real energy into what’s typically a slower season. And we always encourage people to make a full downtown visit out of it — pop into a shop, book a salon appointment, catch a show, or grab a drink before or after your burger. A lot of downtown retailers and entertainment venues are rolling out specials and extended hours in January, and it’s a great time to discover something new.

If you haven’t started yet, or if you’ve only tried one or two burgers, this weekend is a great time to jump in. And before I move onto the rest of the weekend, one massive shoutout to our sponsors at POET. The burger battle doesn’t exist with out them and we are beyond grateful for the work they are doing in our community.

Outside of Burger Battle, there are a few other great things happening downtown this weekend.

On Friday night, HEART of the City runs from 5 to 7:30. This is an annual found-object art show where local artists of all ages transform everyday materials into meaningful artwork centered around this year’s theme of love. It’s a great opportunity to walk, explore, and see downtown through a creative lens.

On Saturday and Sunday, Startup Sioux Falls is hosting a CO.STARTERS Bootcamp — a two-day program for anyone thinking about starting a business, growing a side hustle, or getting more clarity around an idea. It’s another example of how downtown supports not just commerce, but entrepreneurship and innovation.

Saturday night, Karaoke at Glacial Lakes Distillery kicks off at 8 and runs until midnight. It’s a consistent favorite and an easy way to keep the night downtown

Burger Battle, art, entrepreneurship, shopping, and nightlife — all happening within a few walkable blocks.

If you want the full list of burgers, locations, voting details, and everything else happening downtown, head to DTSF.com. But most importantly, grab a burger this weekend — or two — and be part of what keeps Downtown Sioux Falls active all year long.
