Blog-December 13, 2022-10-11—South Dakota Farmers Union Show

It’s Convention Week for the 107th Year for the South Dakota Farmers Union. And it’s just fitting that we do our monthly show---with some snow---some ice---and the promise that the holiday season is moving right along.

Good  ---no make it Great List of Guests telling the SDFU Stories ----

Long time South Dakota Farmers Union Vice President—Wayne Soren and Mr. Communication Luke Reindl—join me to put the touches on an hour of information designed to help not only the 17 or 18,000 members—but many more families and friends that should be and could be in the future.

Mr. Soren helps us start and finish the show----to start—we’ll talk about the true grassroots in policy from County/district thru the State and National Level.

Later in the show—Wayne helps us pass the torch to the next generation—with an up and comer from his hometown of Lake Preston.

Rob Larew—the National Farmers Union President joins us---

We’ll talk about the latest doings or non-doings in DC—talk as well about Fairness for Farmers—meat and poultry processing expansion---the new Congress---with what the focus on agriculture SHOULD BE. And even the UN Summit on Climate Change in Egypt.  The National Farmers Union President and Zippy Duval—the American Farm Bureau President were making an announcement today---working together---in something that is becoming more and more common. Larew talked to us from Jamestown---and plans to be at the SD Farmers Union—annual convention (107th) later in the week.

In January—Marty Jackley will become the SD Attorney General---we talked with him in the show about the packer accountability with livestock and grains---answering what those in agriculture in South Dakota can expect from his AG’s office---and Market Fairness.

Mitch Richter—who represents the South Dakota Farmers Union in Pierre—shared what he expects in the upcoming 2003 Legislative Session---agriculture is the #1 industry in South Dakota---and Mitch works for SDFU in so many positive ways. Each week—Richter and others that are covering the legislature as media members—meet talking ways to get the most from agriculture. They may disagree in a number of ways---but they work together as well. It should give those affected by agriculture a smile on their faces---knowing that those organizations can –do—and will come together---to get the most they can for old #1---Agriculture.

Jeff Kippley—yes from the South Dakota Kippley Branch—was selected as Vice President of the National Farmers Union----he talked about the importance of YOUTH in AGRICULTURE---yes the next generation of producers and leaders.

He talked about the FUEL Program—creating leaders in Agriculture—and Jeff has it as a pet project for what he does.

One of the youngsters that made the trip with the Fly-in to Washington DC was Garrett Kruger---yes from Wayne Soren’s Home Town of Lake Preston. Kruger and Soren talked about what Garrett is doing as a TORCH Bearer---good stuff---and we like seeing our young people wanting to make a difference.

I remember Garrett in DC---we did an interview with him while we were there---and I had no doubt---that we need many more like Garrett Kruger.

We closed the show with Laura Edwards—SD State Climatologist---she was out of school with her kids today—another LaNina siege---as Laura shared it’s the 3rd year in a row.

As we talked about the weather conditions in the state---she suggested that the weather for the 107th Convention Year—Thursday and Friday in Huron—could work----but could have some challenges. Laura helps us---and believes in South Dakota—rain-snow-sleet or maybe even an occasional ray of sunshine.
