Dr. Joshua Jordee—joins us with the back to school season right there---
With the return to school for many as well as it turning into the last few days of summer, I’ve been seeing quite a wide range of patients lately. Actually, I’ve been seeing quite a few, in general.
With is being the ‘back to school season’, I’ve had quite a few parents bring their kids in for a simple back to school checkup and tune-up, though I’ve also had quite a few coming in having already started
extracurricular activities and getting back into the swing of things with practice whether it be football or color guard. Before too long, I’m sure I’ll see plenty of marching band kids as well. Perhaps not as high and impact as other extracurricular activities, but between the marching in general, and especially with some instruments more than others like the sousaphone, trombone, or my personal favorite, the tenor
sax.
In addition to the more obvious things bringing those kids in, like impacts in football, there’s also the repetitive strain factor that often brings adults in, too. Kids are often pretty resilient compared to adults,
but when you get them marching in a field carrying a heavy instrument after a summer that’s often mostly sedentary, the body takes a little while to figure out what’s going on and sometimes needs to be
helped along the way.
Another thing bringing in both kids and adults lately is people getting in their last vacations of summer and dealing with travelling stress and fatigue. I’ve had plenty of patients in the last week or two coming in after flying or sitting in a car for hours on end and then sleeping in beds they aren’t used to with pillows they aren’t used to end ending up with neck pain, back pain, etc. Going back to some of my previous shows, if anyone still has a vacation coming up, remember one of the simplest things you can bring to help yourself out while travelling is your own pillow. And when driving, remember to make frequent stops to get out and stretch. With us having three kids at home, that’s still easy as one or another of them always seems to have to stop for the bathroom, but I make sure to tell the other ones to get up and out of the car and move around even if they don’t have to go while their sibling is. Finally, although I’m not quite yet getting the gardening types coming in as a result of the fall clean up and yard work, I’ve been seeing quite a few patient who grow vegetables coming in with low and especially middle back pain from not only bending over to pick their vegetables, but also from standing over a kitchen counter for long periods spent canning, pickling, preserving, chopping, dicing, making sauces, etc. One of the things about standing over a kitchen counter like that is there aren’t really any times in nature where a person has to stand slightly bent over for more than a few seconds. When a person bends all the way down, the body tries to stabilize and protect itself, because it’s dealing with a lot of leverage and weight of the torso. But when bending over slightly, the body doesn’t feel quite the same need to as it doesn’t know you’re going to be doing that for a half hour or more at a time. Just like
most other physical activities, make sure if you’re doing anything like that, that you straighten up on occasion when able and stretch not only your back, but also your shoulders as you’re likely working with your arms forward during that whole activity as well.
So hopefully some of that will be good advice to those who haven’t quite started the back to school activities yet or still have one more vacation coming up like for Labor Day, or who, like me, have a garden, but everything is coming in a bit on the later side than everybody else’s. For the rest of you, though, who hear some of the situations I’m talking about and realize who have indeed started having some recent pain after going through some of those activities or changes in routine, we have three doctors able to help out with that at Jorde Chiropractic Clinic. We’re located at 2821 S. Center Ave. You can find us online and even book online at Jordechiropractic.com, or call us at 605-3350880. We’re open 6 days a week, MWF 9-5:30, TTh 9-12:30, and Saturday 9-noon.
