The NFL season is barely underway, and the injury questions are already piling up. It’s Football Friday on Injury Territory, and Will Carroll and Edward Egros are separating the useful information from the noise around some of the biggest early-season NFL injury stories.

Will breaks down Sam Darnold’s hip injury and what a subluxation can mean beyond simply getting the joint back where it belongs. We also look at A.J. Brown, check the latest on whether Jeremiyah Love will be able to play, and dig into the situation surrounding Tua Tagovailoa. Is Tua actually headed for missed time, or are we getting ahead of the medical information again?

Then there’s Christian McCaffrey, where the question isn’t only whether he can play—it’s how much he should play. Will and Edward look at McCaffrey’s workload, what San Francisco is asking of him, and whether managing touches actually changes injury risk or simply changes how we talk about it.

Edward also brings original research to one of football’s most intuitive assumptions: does where and how a quarterback gets hit actually predict whether he’ll miss the next game? Pocket hits, sacks and scramble tackles certainly look different. The data, however, may not care nearly as much as we do. It’s another reminder that mechanism can tell us something without necessarily telling us the outcome.

From Sam Darnold’s hip and A.J. Brown’s injury status to Tua Tagovailoa, Jeremiyah Love, Christian McCaffrey’s workload and quarterback hit data, Football Friday goes past the designation on the injury report to explain what actually matters. That’s injury intelligence: better information, better context, and fewer conclusions based on how scary the replay looked.
