Definitely encourage you to go back through the archives check it out, and you can also see it right now on the Hornets YouTube page. But we're back to work now. We'll have our game preview, talk about the new uniforms that the Hornets are Gonna wear today and talk about the exquisite start the season for LaMelo Ball, specifically focused on an area where he is better than anybody else in the NBA, the fourth quarter. Helping me on all of these topics. He's my producer on the Hornets, Rado and Network Ause Well was the producer of this fine podcast, Rob Longo, here with me once again. Rob. Hopefully you enjoyed a few rainy days off from being in the podcast studio and in the broadcast studio. But we got to sit down with Josh Green. So a worthwhile thing to take a back.
Seat to a beautiful podcast for a rainy day. I guess you could say, so. Yeah, I mean, obviously why there could have been a little bit better here the last couple of days in the Queen City. But maybe I'm getting to that point where I'm that old and I say we needed this rain. Is that something that Dad says? So I guess it out on.
Your porch and you know, yell at the clouds for a while. And as you said, listen to that great conversation we were able to have with Josh Green. Thanks again to him for satting down with us. If you haven't caught it yet. You can learn some new Australian lingo, find out what he has for his process in deciding what he wears for walking photos. Lots of fun stuff there. In addition to you know, basketball, what it's like playing with LaMelo ball and how maybe it compares to playing with Luka Doncic, two things he has some experience with. Speaking of LaMelo ball, that's where we want to start this podcast today. Rob his numbers this season have just been phenomenal. He's been the best player on the Hornets by far. He's been one of the best in the NBA as a whole. He's averaging thirty points per game. Actually it's twenty nine point nine, but you know we're quibbling here. He's basically averaging thirty points per game. He's top five in the NBA in scoring. He has been elite across the board in a variety of categories. And it's just been dazzling to watch him at work here for the Charlotte Hornets. And so we'll talk about him in the context of the fourth quarter stats, which have been especially impressive here. I don't know where the Hornets are without him, but certainly they're nowhere near the record they have right now because LaMelo Ball, at almost thirty points per game, is playing at an all NBA.
Level, And if you break it down a little bit more, going into that fourth quarter, leading the fourth quarter in points so far around eleven and a half twelve points per game field goals, he's making about four of them three pointers. He's making two or so per game in that fourth quarter. You know, fifteen or more points in the fourth quarter four times already this season. I know it was a little bit lower against Orlando. The other night, he was around seven, just because well, the game was kind of out of reach at that point, so obviously the averages aren't going to be that high whenever the game was out of reach. And he only played i think five and a half minutes and that fourth quarter towards the beginning of it, just to see if the Hornets could get anything going before they sat him out for the last couple minutes of the game. But I mean, he has just been absolutely phenomenal. And I think we saw another piece of his arsenal in that game Tuesday against the Magic because although he only scored seven points there in that fourth frame, he had a career best sixteen points in that first quarter, the most he's ever had in an opening quarter in a game. So, you know, I know we're talking about the fourth quarter numbers and he looked great, but just the overall body of work too from LaMelo Ball. You go back and you look at it from a thirty thousand feet lead wide view. He's one of only eight players this season average over twenty five points five assists per game. The others Janni Santa, Kakupo, Jalen Brunson, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilges, Alexander Nikole, Jokic, Damian Lillard, Jason Tatum. That is a lead company that is All Star company. Obviously, LaMelo is a former All Star looking to get back to All Star status this year. And again, I think at this point it's hard to ignore that. I know that we're hoping that the record gets better here for the Hornets once they get some healthy bodies back. But even if the record isn't where the Hornets hope it is, there's still an opportunity for LaMelo Ball to be an All Star. That's a conversation for a much leiier down the road. But in terms of what he's doing right now, especially in the fourth quarter, it's remarkable.
Yeah, that could be a homework for you. When's the last time someone averaged thirty points per game and didn't make the All Star team. I don't think it's gonna be LaMelo ball. Drilling down a little bit into his numbers here, you referenced some of the areas where he leads the NBA in fourth quarter stats out. I want to put some context on this because leading the NBA is one thing, but how much he is leading it by puts it in a different viewpoint points per fourth co LaMelo leads with eleven point two. He's over four made field goals per fourth quarter and over two made threes per fourth quarter. He also, though, leads in the total numbers the raw stats for each of those categories. Why is that important. He's played less fourth quarters than a lot of people. He leads in total points with one hundred and twelve total field goals, at forty one total threes at twenty one. He's played ten fourth quarters. The people that are second to him in those categories Cam Thomas and Norman Powell, and they're second by a significant margin. Here in all of those categories. They've all played in a dozen fourth quarters, so they've had two more fourth quarters to play, even if they're not playing all those minutes. Let's say they're playing I don't know eight, that's sixteen more minutes on the floor. That's ten percent more or maybe even twenty percent more fourth quarter time that these guys are getting. Then LaMelo ball, and yet his numbers continue to dwarf from one more thing that I thought was impressive here about the fourth. Then I'll let you get in for a final word on this one, rob Not all fourth quarters are created equal. Sometimes the Hornets are up big, sometimes they've been down, like the last game in Orlando, and they let LaMelo go out there, try and help Brandon Miller find some rhythm, continue his numbers, you know, just stay in his rhythm. Looking ahead to what was at the time going to be a three day layoff, which we're now on the back end of. But specifically crunch time. That's where you, in theory, have things matter the most. This is the finite period of time at the end of games where it's within a couple of possessions. Where does LaMelo rank. He's top ten in points, he's top ten in threes in the five games he's played in crunch time, so he's not number one necessarily there. His scoring is more spread out. Some of the explosion has come earlier in fourth quarters, but that again is quibbling. He's top ten in points and threes in clutch time in the NBA, and Charlotte has a three and two record in games that get to crunch time. So he's winning the games. He's contributing the major plays, and whether he's actually doing that offensive work at the very end of the game or he's doing it to get them into crunch time is irrelevant. Because the Hornets are coming through ahead more often than not, LaMelo is able to lead them into crunch time.
And this might be a little bit of a bizarre stat but it might end up being true at the end of the season. Like I mentioned earlier, he's got those four games where he's had fifteen or more in a fourth quarter. That's already the third most in a season in franchise history. Glenn Rice did it five times in a ninety seven ninety eight season. Kemba Walker's the leader in a clubhouse. In the twenty eighteen nineteen season, he did it ten times. But if you've done it four times in a first what eleven games, I mean that percentage wise, that's insane. Second off, the fact that he might get to ten by I don't know, the end of December is very possible as well. So I mean again, I think that we are sometimes prisoners of the moment just because of the way that this league is, and it's every other night you got a new challenge in a new game. But what LaMelo Ball's done here through the first eleven games of the season, I don't think we can discount it at all.
Hopefully we can count on it for the remaining seventy one here because he has just been tremendous here for the Hornets. Hopefully he can get a little bit more help and the team can get a little more health. Overall, those two things might end up being tied together. But LaMelo Ball tremendous, tremendous start to the season, tremendous close to all of these games, and some more love for the one, the only, the one of one LaMelo Ball. Coming up next, We've got a game to preview tonight, Hornets hosting the Milwaukee Bucks. A bit of a Mattinea three PM tip time, and the Hornets are debuting some new uniforms. We'll talk about how the Hornets have minted their new unis. Next here on the Hornets Sibcast, Sam Farbar rob Longo here with you on the HC the Hornet Side Cast, brought to you by Senta. Hornets taking on the Milwaukee Bucks tonight. After that, the Hornets immediately head out on the road and they will take on the top team right now record wise in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers. It's part of a two game road trip for Charlotte, though, after that head over to Brooklyn for an NBA Cup contest, and then they are back home for a Thursday evening contest against the Detroit Pistons, second and final time on the schedule that Detroit is coming to the Queen City. See if Charlotte can equal the heroics of their previous win. Brandon Miller the tip in at the buzzer to get that w And then after that, after a one game road trip, Charlotte is back for a longer home stand. They're gonna have five in a row at Spectrum Center over the course of the week of Thanksgiving. Tickets for all home games are available at Hornets dot com. New uniforms are gonna get debuted tonight here, Rob Loong, I shouldn't say tonight, this evening, afternoon, whatever. It's gonna be an exciting time as the Hornets' debut. The fourth and final installment of their Minted City Edition unis beautiful. Mint uniforms, black letters and numbers with gold outline. There's a lot of detail that goes in to jersey design, and you have been breaking it down here in preparation for this podcast. I know it.
Yeah, And honestly, these might be the best uniforms yet, I know that the leaders in the clubhouse, I think for me personally, we're the original ones back in the twenty twenty twenty twenty one season. Well, these are very very similar. They're almost identical. There's a couple of different details. The first big one is that those first City Edition jerseys said buzz City across the front. Look great, Don't get me wrong. These ones say Charlotte across the front, which I think is a little bit of a nicer touch. Nothing wrong with the buzz City moniker. I think I just like seeing Charlotte across the chest a little bit better, and then around the waistband as well. There was the Charlotte see almost like a third logo that was on the twenty twenty twenty twenty one uniforms. This one now has the area code on the waistband seven oh four and the o is a hexagon and it says buzz City around it, which is almost another one of those logos we've seen at on the twenty twenty three twenty four jerseys. Those were the teal and the lighter blue, I guess you could say, with buzz City across the front. But yeah, there's a lot of details in this one. There's obviously the moniker as well of Queen Charlotte that's in there. That's gonna be on the bottom left side, kind of by the tag where you would maybe see the sizing of the jersey and that kind of stuff. The cltre is still on air black and gold trim. You got the secondary logo with the hornet with the stinger on its side. That's on both sides of the shorts as well. There's just so many little details in this one. They look really sharp. Brandon Miller did a really good job modeling these ones off. If you didn't see him. Go to Hornets dot com. There's a whole photo gallery of brand address to him. Of course, you can see him tonight if you're coming to the game. Tickets available at Hornets dot com, so you'll see him tonight. You'll see him at the end of the month against Atlanta on November thirtieth, a couple of times in December as well, back to back games at home at the end of December. In fact, there's one against Cleveland on December seventh, but then against Oklahoma City and Chicago that's December twenty eighth December thirtieth. You'll see him back to back once again in January against Portland and the Pelicans. Couple of Western Conference teams January twenty fourth and twenty fifth, even at the end of the month against the Clippers on January thirty first, and then February first, February seventh. Final times you can catch them against Denver and San Antonio. Interesting that they're all against a lot of Western Conference opponents. I don't know how that worked down, but it's just the way that the schedule did. But yeah, super excited for these uniforms. Horns Its fan shop already has a couple in stock. I'm sure they're going like hotcakes right now, but I'm sure you can order a couple as well if they run out. But these are really pretty. The mint, the gold, the granite. I love this color scheme. I love the purple ones heal, don't get me wrong. But if you're looking for a third jersey and alternate jersey and that kind of stuff, I don't think you can get any better about this in the NBA.
Yeah, And I especially like having Charlotte across the chest. That's a lot of fun there too, repping our hometown here, the Queen City. These are a lot of fun and are going to be very very popular. So the City edition uniforms are out there, available at the team store, and they will be on display today as the Hornets take on the Milwaukee Bucks. And speaking of which, when we return, we will have our game preview for today's head to head and meeting, the first of the season between the Charlotte Hornets and the Milwaukee Bucks. Game preview next year on the Hornets five Cast. Sam Farbar Rob Blongo here with you on the HHC The Hornets Iodcast, brought to you by Centa. Hornets four and seven, hosting the four more and eight Milwaukee Bucks. Little bit surprising that Milwaukee has the record that they do at this point. They've had a couple of recent injuries, but overall not enough that really explains away all that they have been through in terms of their record. Hornets, of course dealing with some injuries as well, but they are currently a half game up on the Bucks in the standings, and they will have their first of three scheduled head to head meetings today at Spectrum Center. One more time that Jana SANTETEKUNMPO and company are coming to Spectrum Center. That'll be in February. But opportunity here for the Hornets to pick up a win after a couple of days off. Technically, this is not a rest advantage game. Usually they say it's a rest advantage if you are on normal rest or multiple days rest and the opponent is on nine two of a back to back. Hornets had an extra couple of days here, but not enough that it would truly signify a rest advantage, at least my understanding of the rules. But that's neither here nor there. Hornet's taking on Milwaukee today a chance to get back in the win column after an O and two road trip, Ron Blongo. You know what we're looking for here on these We need players to watch for both teams, as well as a stat to watch other than points, because that's cheating. After all, whoever scores the most wins the game. Where do you want to begin.
Let's go ahead and start with a Milwaukee player to watch. Hard to believe that they're four and eight, considering that they have so many talented pieces over there. I know that there's some questions around Damian Lillard. He entered concussion protocol earlier in the week, so probably not going to see him. Haven't seen Chris Middleton yet this year, so I mean, they do have some pieces missing that are pretty sizable all things considered. But Johannsanta Kakoupo, I think he's obviously the one. I don't want to say he struggled, obviously because he was averaging twenty five and five, like we were talking about there earlier in that first segment of the podcast. But he's got to be the guy that puts everything on his shoulders and goes downhill and attacks and scores, and he certainly did that in their game on Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons. It went to overtime, which was kind of shaky, I guess you could say, But at the end of the day, they end up getting to win one twenty seven to one, twenty fifty nine points, fourteen rebounds, seven assists, three blocks, two steals, did everything. But the thing that scares me about Yannis in this matchup is just his size. Obviously. I mean, I know the Hornets are still missing pieces in the middle, but the way he attacked and scored his buckets was a problem against Detroit sixteen to seventeen at the free throw line. We've seen that story before with Jayson Tatum earlier in the season, twenty one to thirty four from the field. He was just one of two from beyond the york. He was not a three point shooter. If you want to get Yanis off his game, or at least hope that somebody else can beat you, or force somebody else to beat you, you gotta make him a three point shooter. That's really tough when he gets in and around the rim. He was thirteen to twenty one from inside the paint in that game against the Pistons, So I mean, it's tough to stop. I know it's a lot easier said than done, but Jannasantaka Kupo just is obviously the player to watch well.
He is an MVP candidate, and he is the number one score in the NBA thirty three points per game. Right now, I agree with a few things, as you said, they're one, you know, best strategies. Try and convince him he's a three point shooter and have him have what for him would be a normal night. Every once in a while he goes off and hits a few of them. But if he shoots closer to the twenty five percent that he has been this season, he you know, really relinquishes some of his offensive effectiveness. The other thing that gives me some faith here is that even though the Hornets don't have necessarily, as the recording of this podcast, we don't have any word of anyone returning here. And we're not gonna go out on Alim or anything, but let's just say they don't have anyone new come back. You've got some very smart defenders who know how to execute a game plan against anyone, and it'll be very key to do so against Giannis Santekompe. I'm thinking of guys like Grant Williams, thinking of guys like Cody Martin, where your job is to build that wall in front of him, stop him from having an easy run out to the basket, and then try and take charges, try and make life more difficult, and encourage Giannis to be more of a jump shooter than an at the rim finisher. If you can do that, that's a job well done here. So Jana Santeekunpo absolutely should be the number one guy to watch. I'm going to go with someone who has been a consistent part of the rotation all season but has also backfilled into the starting lineup as well, and that's Aj Green. Green's a guy who has made his way into the rotation the last couple of seasons. Green not all that heralded coming out of college. He was not a draft pick. He originally was on a two way contract, but he's had some decent games against Charlotte in more limited roles. He averaged more than ten points per game against Charlotte in two head to head meetings two years ago, was close enough four points per game last year in four overall meetings. One thing he's always done consistently well he shoots the three. He shot better than forty percent against the Hornets each of the last two seasons. Over the course of this season, that has jumped up despite the volume going up to fifty percent from beyond the arch. So this sy can really shoot the basketball. Hornets have got to be cognizant of him. I think with the depleted potentially wealth of talent for Milwaukee that they would have if they were completely healthy here, more pressure goes on Yannis and you look to someone else who can be that running mate for him and maybe pop off supply fifteen twenty, maybe more points unexpectedly and make the difference. A lah Jared McCain the other day for Philadelphia, and I think aj Green kind of fits that mole. So that's why he is going to be my player to watch for Milwaukee next up.
Stat to watch or want it to watch Hornet to watch doesn't have to be a player generally. Okay, well, I was thinking maybe Charles Lee could be the watch stick.
Let's do that.
No, I mean, I'll pick a player. But the one thing that you have to keep in mind too is Charles Lee spent some time in Milwaukee, won a championship there. He's been around Yiannis. He knows his tendencies, and I think that if you're going to win in this league, or at least be competitive in this league, it helps to know your personnel. And obviously a lot of that is scouting and that kind of stuff. But who knows anybody else's weakness other than somebody that was on the staff at one point in time. So again, I'm not saying that Charles he's gonna go out there and be able to exploit Giannis to X, Y and Z. I think it's pretty well known what Giannis is good at and what he's not good at at this point of his career. And obviously he's good hit a lot of things.
Everything.
Yeah, he's pretty much good at everything except for taking free throws within ten seconds. But I digress. At any rate, if we got to take a player, I'm gonna take Mussa Diabati off the bench. Had a great game the other night in Orlando, first career double double, twelve points, fifteen boards, six to seven at the field. I mean, I know everything is in tight around the rim, but still that's that's tough territory down there. Whenever you're trying to go to battle with some of those bigs around the Rims. So I thought that Moosa has done a great job here, all things considered, has been put in some tough situations here, but coming off the bench. I talked about this on the podcast the other day. If you're a backup center or you're playing in that second rotation as a center in the NBA, you need to bring the energy. Musa Diabate is a workhorse when it comes to that.
I mean he is.
He has a Ferrari engine in I mean, he just goes and goes and goes. So I love Musa. I love what he's been able to do here over the course of the first couple of games. So, all things considered, with a tough circumstances that he's had to deal with, but I thought he's done a very admirable job filling in these situations and hopefully he's able to do it again tonight against Milwaukee because they're gonna need it.
Very interesting pick. Actually, I did not think you were gonna take him. That's why I had to put him number one on my list. So interesting that that's who you went with. So I'm gonna go to Plan B here and I'm gonna go with LaMelo Ball, and not that he's ever playing, but he's playing a he's number one, he's one of one, but definitely someone I've got my eye on here for this one, just as Giannis has in terms of physicality, certain advantages over everyone he plays. It's not just a tonight thing against the Hornets. He is a unique physical player in his own right. But I think LaMelo has certain edges over Milwaukee as well. And one of the keys here is with Milwaukee down a couple of guys, that's elevated some players, and I think who's maybe more likely to defend LaMelo Ball than anyone else. I think maybe a Delon Wright who's bubbled up into that lead guard position. He does have some physical advantages over some of the more diminutive guards in the NBA, being that he's six foot five. But you look at LaMelo's numbers over the course of his career, he's been an outstanding score overall, particularly obviously this season, but he hasn't gone head to head with Delann Right. When you look at his overall lifetime scoring average, it's twenty point five points per game, but in the last three years it's closer to twenty six twenty seven. You look at the head to head meetings between LaMelo Ball and Delon Right, and his numbers are slightly slightly down. He's at twenty point per game, even field goal percentages at forty two percent, that's right on the nose for what he averages lifetime thirty seven percent three point percentage. Those are overall numbers. When you look at him head to head against Delann Wright, they come down ever so slightly here. So I think LaMelo is going to have He's going to have to be superman for the Hornets each and every night, particularly while they're dealing with injuries. I think Brandon Miller is certainly to have a bounce back game because I don't think he's ever gone one for eleven in any others. I think we could blindfold him and put him in half court and he make two. He's just that kind of shooter. So I'm expecting a big bounce back game from him. But I think LaMelo has an advantageous matchup potentially here given his new found superpower as even compared to what he'd been doing before. So LaMelo Ball my player to watch. Last, but not least. We need a stat to watch.
I think the obvious one here is going to be rebounding, more specifically on the offensive end of the glass here for the Hornets, because the Hornets do not have a very good field goal percentage right now. They are next to last in the Association so far this season in field goal percentage at about forty three percent. So a lot of it obviously has come on second chance points. They're third, and that they've done a really good job. The offensive rebounding percentage is top five. They do a great job crashing the boards after a miss. The problem here is that the Bucks are a top five team in defensive rebounding. They're in their third in fact, so that's going to be tough to overcome. I know that's kind of simplifying the game, but again, a lot of rebounding is about effort and sometimes positioning, I suppose, but a lot of it I think has to do about effort and just winning the ball a little bit more so. The Hornets has done a good job of that so far this year, hopefully not hopefully it needs to continue here against Milwaukee tonight to have a really good chance. And again I'm feeling like I'm a little pessimistic on this podcast, on this game previous, just because I'm saying that there's pieces on the other side that scare me a bit, But it's just numbers in the reality of the situation here. So you know, if the Hortons had Mark Williams or a couple of other guys, it'd be a different story. But right now, with the way that those roster is constructed, they need everybody to pitch in and they need everybody to have max effort to win against a team like Milwaukee. Don't let the record fool you on the Bucks, even though that they are four and eight and technically have a worse winning percentage than the Hornets. But at the same time, you got to play the opponents in front of you, and that's what Charlotte needs to do tonight to take care of business.
Yeah, they kind of line up similarly because both teams have a super super superstar playing at an extraordinary level. Jann It's coming off a fifty nine point performance in the win over Detroit. A Lamello has had three straight thirty point game. So both of them are top five to ten in the NBA and scoring and having great years, but their teams record wise have been a bit deflated, and I think injuries are a big culprit for both, so good tie in there. I feel like we were both looking at the same stats here because I also was looking at field goal percentage just like you were, but we both kind of squinted at it and saw it from a different angle. So you said, huh, they're not shooting very well. We need to get more rebounds, And you're right. The Bucks are a good defensive rebounding team. They're a terrible offensive rebounding team. So I think the Hornets will have an advantage in second chance point. It's about the margins. How much of an advantage can they draw there, because they might need one. I squinted though, at field goal percentage and garnered a different lesson here. I'm looking at assists. I want to see the Hornets have a big assist game. That really hasn't happened very much this season. The few times that Charlotte has kind of popped off and had a big assist day, I think the results have been a bit stronger here for the Hornets overall. So that's kind of the number. I'm looking at. LaMelo balls such a dynamic passer, and he's rightfully looking for his own shot and creating good opportunities off it. But the Hornets far and away best offensive game as a team this year was against Toronto. That's the only time they've gone over thirty assists. Thirty is a big number. I don't need to know that they necessarily need to get there, but twenty five would certainly be helpful. So I'm looking for Charlotte to have a better passing day. And it's not just the passing, it's making the shot after you get the pass. Because LaMelo's put the ball on the money a couple of times just for the shot not to go in. You got to keep shooting those. But hopefully it's time for things to turn the Hornets way and they'll start to drop. Here for Team Teal, actually I should say Team Mints because they're wearing minted uniforms tonight, Rob.
I like it. That's a good call. It should be the what would we say usually be Men of Mints, Men of men and Mints. Okay, I don't like it, now, will workshop on it? Please send your comments so we don't have to use that.
Thank you. There we go. We'll have the Hornets versus the Bucks later on today on The Hornets Podcast, and then after the game, Rob Loongo Sam Purley will have a postgame wrap up edition of the HHC looking back at Hornets Bucks, plus giving you a preview for Hornets at Calves.
