Spanish Conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés routed the French Florida colony in 1565 and slaughtered the Protestant Huguenots. Three years later, French nobleman and soldier Dominique de Gourgues returned to the area, and, with the help of Native allies, massacred the Spanish garrison in retaliation.
