Written by Thomas Jefferson of Virginia in June 1776, the Declaration of Independence is an act of rebellion that expresses the political principles of an emerging nation and justification for severing ties with England. Adopted on July 4th, the Declaration presented a detailed list of grievances against King George III and declared the thirteen colonies of America to be sovereign states, unified as one new nation called the United States of America.
