Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia invaded Pennsylvania and clashed with Union Major General George Meade’s Army of the Potomac in and around the town of Gettysburg during the first 3 days of July, 1863. Nearly two hundred thousand men met during the battle, resulting in the largest number of casualties of the entire war, with over fifty-one thousand dead, wounded, captured or missing.
