472. What is Boxing Day?

Born in Maine, then part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sir William Phips (1651-95) rapidly advanced from shepherd boy to shipwright, ship's captain, and treasure hunter. Captain Phipps was famous in his lifetime for recovering a large treasure from a sunken Spanish galleon in 1686.

Adopted on July 4th, the Declaration presented a detailed list of grievances against King George III and declared the thirteen colonies of America to be sovereign states, unified as one new nation called the United States of America.
