Do modern historians of North America owe a debt of gratitude to Herodotus (484-425 BC), widely credited as being the First Historian? Herodotus traveled widely in the ancient Greek world and wrote down what he saw and the stories he heard. He coined the word history, which is Greek for "inquiries."
