Lent is the solemn Christian religious observance in the liturgical year commemorating the 40 days Jesus of Nazareth spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan, before beginning his public ministry, according to the synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Lent is observed in the Catholic Church, as well as many Protestant denominations, and also some nondenominational Christian churches.
