Jacques Cartier planted a 30-foot wooden cross overlooking the bay of Gaspé (Quebec, Canada) on his first exploration trip in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This act symbolized the ownership of the territory on behalf of the French Catholic King, Francis I, on July 24th, 1534.
