Cartier (1491-1557) grew up in the Catholic port city of Saint-Malo in France where he acted frequently as a godfather and witness in local church baptismal registries. He sailed under the authority of the "Most Christian King" Francis I and voyaged under official royal mandates that explicitly tied French exploration to the service of Catholic Christendom. Cartier famously planted a 30-foot cross at Gaspé  Bay in 1534 that symbolized both French sovereignty and the Catholic faith. He also named many of his discoveries in honor of Christianity, including the majestic Saint Lawrence River.
