Bob Hendrix: Loop Biotech inventor and founder on the company's new biodegradable mushroom coffins

View descriptionShare

Kiwis will soon have the option to be buried in biodegradable coffins, with the new service hitting the New Zealand market this week.

The coffins are made from mycelium and upcycled plant fibres - and they take a week to grow in the lab.

These coffins are the project of Dutch biotechnology company Loop Biotech, and founder and inventor Bob Hendrix says they can also be nutrition for the soil itself.

"We have an opportunity to feed the earth when we die...in ideal conditions, it's actually very fast - it's 45 days."
