We all know what it feels like to have a bad night’s sleep, but how can you tell if you’re genuinely sleep deprived? Is there a way to test it, and what are the signs that your body simply isn’t getting enough restorative sleep?

In this Mini Motivation episode of Healthy Her, Amelia Phillips puts these questions to clinical sleep specialist Dr Amelia Scott, founder of Circa Sleep, who works with people experiencing insomnia, disrupted sleep, anxiety, stress and low mood.

Together, they explore how to recognise sleep deprivation and, importantly, what to do about it. They also put some of the most popular sleep supplements and gadgets under the microscope to find out which might actually be worth your time and money.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How to tell if you’re genuinely sleep deprived
  • Whether there are reliable ways to test for sleep deprivation
  • The telltale daytime signs that you may not be getting enough sleep
  • What to do if you realise you have accumulated a sleep debt
  • Whether the viral “spoon test” has any validity
  • What the evidence says about magnesium glycinate, glycine and L-theanine for sleep
  • Whether herbs such as valerian, lavender and chamomile can help
  • Dr Amelia’s thoughts on mouth taping and nasal breathing devices
  • Whether wearables such as the Apollo Neuro have a meaningful role in sleep
  • The pros and cons of temperature-regulating technology such as the Eight Sleep Pod
  • Which sleep aids Dr Amelia believes are actually worth considering
