Therefore, trends in recent years showing a deterioration in birth weight of Malaysian babies have raised concerns among healthcare professionals. In 2022, almost 13 in every 100 live births were low birth weight babies, and this number has been steadily increasing over the previous years. How could pharmacogenomics help to improve personalised medicine, as well as prevent problems from adverse drug reactions. Dr Rebecca Tay, Co-Organising Chairperson of the 1st Malaysia Pharmacogenomics Summit 2024, brings her expertise in pharmacy and molecular medicine to this discussion.

From the point of research and development all the way to the final product, there are multiple barriers which prevent those who need these lifesaving products most from accessing them.
