Hurricane conditions are anticipated for Kauaʻi County Monday and will continue into Tuesday as Hurricane Lowell passes west of Niʻihau. State and Kauaʻi County offices, public schools, Kaua‘i Community College and Hawaiʻi State Judiciary facilities on Kauaʻi will be closed Tuesday. Kauai officials urge public to stay home as Hurricane Lowell nears | Full press conference | Sept. 7, 2026

Shifting closer to the islands, Hurricane Lowell is bringing destructive winds, heavy rains, and dangerous surf. Schools and the Lihue airport have been shut down ahead of the storm, with five refuge areas now open for residents seeking safety. While the worst conditions are expected overnight, flash flooding and rising stream levels are already forcing major road closures and threatening homes.
