A divided Hawaii Supreme Court today declared City Council Chair Tommy Waters is ineligible to run for another term. Hawaiian Electric has restored power to another 1,000 famililes left in the dark after Hurricane Lala nearly two weeks ago. And the Salvation Army has now stepped in to help with daily meals for 220 residents for up to seven days, or until power is restored.

As Hurricane Lowell begins to move away from the state, there's still plenty of severe weather ahead. The storm closed down Lihue airport, suspending flights in and out of Lihue yesterday afternoon. And we are set to mark 25 years since 9/11. Across the country, schools are approaching the terror attacks in different ways.

And we are set to mark 25 years since 9/11. Across the country, schools are approaching the terror attacks in different ways.

Sunrise 5 a.m. (Sept. 8, 2026)

Shifting closer to the islands, Hurricane Lowell is bringing destructive winds, heavy rains, and dangerous surf. Schools and the Lihue airport have been shut down ahead of the storm, with five refuge areas now open for residents seeking safety. While the worst conditions are expected overnight, flash flooding and rising stream levels are already forcing major road closures and threatening homes.

Hurricane conditions are anticipated for Kauaʻi County Monday and will continue into Tuesday as Hurricane Lowell passes west of Niʻihau. State and Kauaʻi County offices, public schools, Kaua‘i Community College and Hawaiʻi State Judiciary facilities on Kauaʻi will be closed Tuesday. Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami and emergency officials briefed the public Monday.
