In this episode, Pastor KC McCauley kicks off our 7-week study with an introduction on two themes that run through the whole book: God’s providence and kindness. It’s set in the same dark days as Judges, but this time we see God working through one faithful family to bring them from famine to fullness. That family line leads to King David, and ultimately to Jesus, our true kinsman Redeemer. We’ll also see great examples of biblical manhood and womanhood in Boaz and Ruth. Let’s lean into this study, because discipleship happens together!

Book of Ruth Introduction — KC McCauley

We know it takes a lot for men to read a book titled “Ruth”, unless they think it is a biography of Home Run Hall of Famer Babe Ruth.

The Old Testament book of Ruth is not only a story about a woman.

It's a story about a legacy.

It’s the story of an incredible young woman who puts her hope in God.

It's a story about a knight in shining armor.

It's the story of a family, with a crowning heritage! In this story is the story of Jesus Christ!

There are some people, whose stories are “inescapably incredible”.

Rags-to-riches story, or the Don Quijote, story of “dreaming the impossible dream…fighting the unfightable foe, running where the brave dare not go…..

The story of Ruth is one of these stories!

This story is like a modern-day immigrant family triumph. Someone whose family has come from Viet Nam, Iran ,or Armenia, with nothing, and had their dreams come true.

Ultimately it is part of the greatest story ever told!!

This is the front story in the book of Ruth.

I want us to look at the first 5 verses of the book of Ruth. And I want tell you upfront, this story has a glorious ending.

The end, is better, than the beginning!

For us as Christians, that is what we all should want, desire, and expect!

It is the Christian life that is the greatest life.

It is the Christian life… that offers the greatest joys, and the greatest hopes, and the greatest future!

Jeremiah 29:11-12

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.

Our lives will be, and should be, an ascent to greater things and greater glory.

When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn — Mike Jonker

These final chapters remind us that the Bible does not hide the failures of God’s people; but rather tells the truth about what happens when people reject God’s authority and do what is right in their own eyes. We will see sin spreading, spiritual compromise growing and moral chaos as a result. Though Israel lacked good leadership, even worse, they rejected God as their King. Judges points us to our need for the righteous and perfect King, Jesus, and calls us to stay rooted, grounded, and surrendered to Him and His Word.

What or Who Determines what Shapes You? — Ron Case

What if the greatest threat to your calling isn’t a lack of strength—but a lack of self-control? And what happens when compromise slowly takes you farther from God than you ever intended to go?

In this episode of the Valor Podcast, Pastor Gabe Velasquez takes us into Judges 13–16 to uncover the story of Samson—a man chosen by God, empowered by the Spirit, and given incredible potential, yet repeatedly undone by his own desires.

Samson was strong enough to tear apart a lion, defeat armies, and carry the gates of a city—but he struggled to control his eyes, his anger, and his appetites. His story shows us how compromise is progressive, how private sin can have public consequences, and how power without purity is a dangerous combination.

But Samson’s story doesn’t end in failure.

In the darkest chapter of his life, when he was blind, broken, and imprisoned, Samson turned back to God. His hair began to grow again. He prayed. And God answered.

Samson’s life is both a warning and a hope. A warning that a great beginning doesn’t guarantee a great ending—and a hope that no matter how far we have fallen, God is still the God of second chances.

If you’ve ever wondered whether God can still use you after failure, this episode is for you.

Let’s learn from Samson. Let’s walk in purity as well as power. And let’s finish well.
