Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the summit of Group of 20 (G20) leaders in New Delhi this weekend. Instead, Premier Li Qiang will lead China’s delegation to the event, as confirmed by Beijing on Monday (Sep 4). 

This marks the first time that Xi is skipping the gathering of the world’s top economies since coming to power. He has attended every G20 summit, except Rome in 2021, when he participated by video link.

The announcement has dashed hopes of a possible meeting between Xi and US President Joe Biden at the summit. Both leaders last met in person in November 2022 on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia.
