The annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore kicked off with a friendly handshake between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu. It was as good as it got. They did not hold any formal talks during the 3-day defence summit.
As expected, there was a war of words over the Taiwan issue between the US and Chinese defence chiefs at their respective sessions. However, compared to previous years, their tones were more moderate and measured.
What are the key takeaways from the Shangri-La Dialogue this year? In this episode of Global Heartbeat podcast, host Han Yong Hong invites Dr Oh Ei Sun, Principal Adviser, Pacific Research Centre of Malaysia and Lianhe Zaobao's Second Foreign Editor (Southeast Asia) Ng Hon Kuan to share their observations of the summit.
Hosted by Lianhe Zaobao’s Associate Editor, Han Yong Hong, Global Heartbeat is a Mandarin weekly news and current affairs podcast that is updated every Tuesday, 7.00 PM SGT. It is available on zaobao.sg, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, Spotify and other podcast platforms.
