The South African Freestyle swimming legend Ryk Neethling is confident that South Africa is standing a very good chance of winning a medal in the 4x100 metre Medley. Neethling said this at the Rio Olympic Aquatic stadium last night. Neethling won an Olympic gold medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay together with Roland Schoeman, Lyndon Ferns and Darian Townsend at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The men’s 4x100 medley relay team comprises of two Olympic champions Chad Le Clos on Butterfly and Cameron Van der Burgh on Breaststroke. Backstroke swimmer Christopher Reid will also be in the mix. The decision will still be made on who takes part in the Freestyle leg but Myles Brown is the favourite to fill the void.Neethling is the former joint holder of the 4×100 m freestyle relay world record, which was later broken by the USA in 2006. He also competed in four successive Olympic Games from 1996 in Atlanta and 2008 in Beijing, and also holds several South African records in various events. Meanwhile Neethling feels disappointed with the absence of female swimmers in Rio. The 38-year old showed his loyalty for his country by refusing a multimillion-dollar offer by Qatar's Olympic body to switch nationalities and swim for the gulf nation at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Despite lack of adequate support from the corporate world, Swimming brought three medals from the six that team SA accumulated in London four years ago. Neethling says more can be achieved with proper support.
