Nomeva, Tete, Fuzile, Durandt talk big after getting boxing awards

Newly crowned South African Male Boxer of the year Xolisani “Nomeva” Ndongeni is bracing himself for some big and life changing fights in 2017. Ndongeni a former South African lightweight champion and current IBO lightweight world champion beat Zolani Tete and stable mate Simphiwe Khonco to this main award at the Boxing South Africa’s awards held at the Chief Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban on Friday night. Reflecting on winning this award, Ndongeni says in the last few years he’s been making history. Ndongeni recently fought in California, in the US and beat Mexican boxer Juan Mendez on unanimous points decision. The Mount Frere born lad is looking to more international fights in that much sought after market. Former IBF junior bantamweight world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete was seen as the overwhelming favourite to win the main award but only ended up going home with the knockout of the year award. He was obviously disappointed by the perceived snub. When he retired from boxing last year, many thought Nick Durandt was joking and he was going to reconsider his decision but he’s kept his word. After decades serving the sport of boxing, he earned himself a double on the night as he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award and the Chairperson’s special award. The flamboyant former boxing trainer and manager was philosophical after getting these awards. SA female bantamweight queen Bukiwe “Anaconda” Nonina deservedly took home the female boxer of the year award beating Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels and Sharadene 'Shinzo' Fortuin to this award. Nonina, who hails from Idutywa in the Eastern Cape, is hungry for more success on the boxing ring after getting this award.
