Basketball is growing fast on the African continent and the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States of America has set its sights on the continent to provide future stars as well as creating awareness with regards to tomorrow's fans. Recently, Amadou Gallo, the managing director of NBA Africa, has embarked on a continent-wide tour including stop-offs in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. The talent hunt is part of the NBA's "Basketball without Borders" program, a community outreach project for young people and is critical to the expansion of the sport's global reach.
Kyler McClary, international Fellow at Peace Players for NBA explains further………

The overall strategy is an African expansion that seeks to make the basketball game accessible, increasing participation and also growing a fan base in Africa for the youth.

Basketball without Borders takes the top young players, aged 19 and under, from all over the world and invite them to train with NBA super stars and coaches. Launched in 2001, the program aims to promote basketball outside the U.S. and also offers young people the chance to develop life skills and education with their mentors.

The NBA signed a multi-year deal with South African pay per-view television channel to broadcast games from the 2013-14 basketball season in 47 Sub-Saharan African nations. Journalist: Coudjoe Amankwaa
