Starting a new school is a big deal, and it isn’t only grown-ups who should be asking the questions. We went to Alleyn’s Regent’s Park and Alleyn’s Hampstead and asked pupils one that really matters: what was your first day actually like?

They told us about feeling nervous, not wanting to let go of Dad and the kind teachers who helped them settle in. We found out what happens next, heard how one pupil made a few friends on day one and now counts loads of people as “basically all besties”, and asked whether anyone is still scared now.

The pupils explain why a good school isn’t only about how it looks, suggest one very searching question for the science teachers about the periodic table, and remind us of the practical stuff grown-ups forget, like what’s for lunch on a Friday.
