845. Fearlessly Failing: The Resilient Actor - Damien Strouthos

This past week in La La Land:

Righto, I had a fun audition earlier in the week, where I got to play a bit of a meanie (and i dressed her in all pink, down to the nails). The audition came in at 7:04PM Monday night and was due by 11AM the following day. There’s a saying that you become “audition fit” in LA because you do so many auditions, but i think its because you have to get so good at the fast turn arounds. I dont mind it but in Australia you usually get a good week to prepare and learn audition sides (scripts), where as here, it’s so quick and to be honest, I dont think I’m putting up my best work. but I am throwing my hat in the mix, so I guess it’s just the way different industries in different places work.

Found a cool new pod studio in LA to record from, it’s a film and audio podcast space in North Hollywood and its brilliant. Its called Bear Punch TV and if you’re ever in LA and need a pod space, its a goodie. They have multiple room options and have even built a fun green rooms for guests and hosts too.

I’m leading a yin yoga teacher training in Beverly Hills this month, I’ve led retreats before but never a full blown teacher training so thats going to be exciting. I’m currently preparing a lecture on the chakras, koshas and kleshas. Here’s a little snapshot:

CHAKRAS:

These guys are like energy centres “Chakra” means “wheel” in Sanskrit. In yogic traditions, chakras are subtle energy centres in the body that regulate physical, emotional, and spiritual processes, and we have 7 of them, starting at the base with our root chakra and moving all the way up to the crown chakra:

Root (stability, survival) red

Sacral (creativity, pleasure) orange

Solar plexus (power, confidence) yellow

Heart (love, compassion) green

Throat (communication) blue

Third eye (intuition) purple

Crown (spiritual connection) violet or white

Fun fact, they say you can use “colour therapy” to wear these colours to tap into each chakras energy.

KOSHAS:

Next up we have the Koshas, they translate to sheath or layer, i like to think of these guys a bit like the layers of an onion, the deep you go, the closer you get to the true self aka ATMAN:

Annamaya Kosha – physical body (food sheath)

Pranamaya Kosha – energy/breath body

Manomaya Kosha – mind (thoughts, emotions)

Vijnanamaya Kosha – wisdom/intellect and intuition

Anandamaya Kosha – bliss or deep inner peace

KLESHAS:

Kleshas come from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and describe mental afflictions or the root causes of human suffering.

There are 5 main kleshas:

Avidya – ignorance (misunderstanding reality)

Asmita – egoism (over-identification with the self)

Raga – attachment (craving pleasure)

Dvesha – aversion (avoiding pain)

Abhinivesha – fear of death

Other that that, I’ve ben hiking, working on a new book idea, looking for a new podcast home and self submitting for acting gigs. So the LA grind is on.

Oh and we also saw 2 rockets, apparently SpaceX launches satellites from California all the time, but we’d just never seen them before, pretty cool. I’ll add a pic! I’ve also got an app (it’s called Next Space Flight) now so I can track when they launch and watch it from out balcony. Pretty cool, especially if you’ve seen Project Hail Mary recently. Which I would give 10/10 stars so if you haven’t seen it, def pop it on your list!

Big love,

Lola

It's an honour to host the Australia House @ SXSW podcast! Brought to you by the American Australian Association!

Today's episode is all about BIG THINKERS:

First up we have Denis Skrinnikoff, the Chief Technology Officer of IREN, I learnt so much from Denis not just about the future of tech and AI but also about IRENs sustainable large scale data centres. Denis inspired me to lean into the future of AI and to grow with it, instead of fearing it.

Next up is Steven Marshall AO, President of the American Australian Association. What a brilliant human and voice. We talked about his role at the American Australian Association, his time as the former premier for South Australia, and the Port Adelaide AFL footy team of course!

Jason Brushe from Nvidia (now the biggest company in the world) was like sitting down with my own personal motivational coach, he's a straight up human, and I love what i love most about Aussies. What you see is what you get with Jason. He will inspire you to stay curios, fail forward, and to move fast.

Andy Stone is the Chief Brand and Culture Officer at the iconic Bluestone Lane Coffee and Old Mates Pub in NYC. He's a total go-getter! He'll have you wanting to set up your very own coffee shop! You can tell Andy cares about community and connection which is probably one of the resaons Blue Stone Lane is so successful!

Emma Lehnhardt is a really cool human on a mission, she worked at NASA managing the business operations of the 7 billion Lunar Gateway program, which is literally a mini space station that will orbit the moon. Emma is so passionate about space, she's even working on her very own Sifi novel, so watch this space!
