We have a gas today, talking about petrol! Get behind the wheel and we’ll drive to Dad’s fuel barrel. How much was your gas or did Dad just shake his head and smile? The diesel went in a faded
green barrel and gas was rusty red. Nowadays it takes a lot of green just to get rolling down the road!

Did you trust your car to the man who wears the star? Or some other full-service station where “Goober” would “Pyle” on the latest gossip as he filled your tank. Those were the days when we
would say fill ‘er up please!” Buckle up for another trip down memory lane during the baby boomer years!

Well, we asked – and you answered! Sharing tales about gopher tails to popple peeling with a spud. What a blast hearing your feedback from our First Jobs episode. What would you do for 75 cents an hour during the baby boomer years?

We also turned the mic in front of a cowboy poet from SD and captured a couple first job tales next to a growing silage pile. Find out the results of our first job Facebook poll:
A) Fun

First Job Feedback Memories

Grab your favorite toy tractor and hook up the wagon or plow. Add a few toy cows, pigs and chickens from the shoebox barn and, you’ve got your own little farm! Today we’re joining John and Pat Klettke, who turned their love of farm toys into an 8’ x 24’ farm showstopper. The diorama showcases 60 plus years of changes on the farm. There’s a machine shed, crops, barns and a rotary milking parlor that actually rotates!

With “Creativity” as his middle name John remembers how they made corn kernel windrows on Mom’s kitchen floor. Turned Pringles cans into silos and chicken waterers into grain bins. Listening to their tales might just have you searching in the attic for that old box of farm toys – waiting in some dark corner. With carpet for roads, grass for haystacks, and a little imagination, we remember playing while growing up, down on the farm!

They usually came when you called them—at least on their own terms. Some had familiar names
like Tippy, Toby, or Josie. Others answered to unforgettable monikers like Killer. Whatever they
were called, they were more than just farm animals. Some were part of the family.

Every farm pet had its own personality, quirks, and daily routine. They greeted us after school,
followed us to the barn, curled up on the porch, or ran along with the tractor. And on Chipmunk
Ridge, some lucky cats even had their own seasonal motel!

Today we're sharing stories about the pets that made growing up on the farm a little more
memorable. They may never have been Westminster Kennel Club material, but they were loyal
companions, faithful friends, and an unforgettable part of life down on the farm.

Farm Pets and Pet Names

Today's guest is Vern Johnson, an equipment trader who's worn a lot of hats. From his family's dairy farm—where his dad famously tripled the herd in a single day—to more than 40 years of buying, selling, and trading equipment. Vern has collected stories that are as memorable as the
machines themselves.

He takes us back to the days of corn pickers, four bottom plows and long Iowa road trips. You'll hear about a 600-mile joyride for a swather that ended about 2,640 feet from home. For Vern, it's never just about the equipment—it's about the people you meet, the relationships you build, and showing up every day determined to do the best job you can.

Remember the cash from your first job? Did you make $1.70 or $3.00 per hour or $150 per month? Did you get an allowance for taking out the trash or feeding the calves? Cold hard cash would burn a hole in your pocket during the baby boomer years.

Whether your first job was walking beans, picking rocks or hoeing tobacco we’re going to uncover the intimate details. How did you make those jobs fun or at least tolerable? K-Tel records, 8 track tapes and Green Hornet comic books was the merch we searched for. And all this could be ours if –
if we could just earn a few bucks and then convince Mom to take us to the store!

In a one room schoolhouse a teacher asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. A doctor. A fireman. Will’s turn came and he answered – I want to be a farmer!

Today we’re switching it up a bit and sitting down with Dan’s neighbor Will. Raised on a ridgetop farm he went on to spend the next 45 years milking cows and farming over 800 acres. From the first bite of apple pie baked for the threshing crew to ball games on hay stubble after first crop. Crossing the border with a load of hogs and even a story passed down about a real 1800s outlaw spending the night in a neighbor’s barn! Will’s tales capture a way of living and share timeless life advice.

And the best part? Will is still going strong!

Farm Memories with Will Beitlich

Neither rain nor sleet nor snow… we’re not talking mail delivery here, but spring planting for farmers. Timing is everything as farmers work against and with the clock and mother nature. The race to be first in the fields is on… with bragging rights and replanting options all on the table.

Sunday drives to see how the neighbors are doing gave Dad a rare chance to get away from the farm for a breather. Sunshine from the sky and barn, spread on our fields. Tillage is rolling, watch out for wet spots as we celebrate another spring down on the farm!

Many baby boomers left their rural route addresses as they made their
way in the world. But your farm remains a part of who you
are…regardless of your current address. Join Dan and Daryl as they
share tales about growing up down on the farm during those baby
boomer years. Just close your eyes and imagine the smell of fresh cut
hay or feel the softness of a baby chick in your hands. You can hear the
cows as they return from the nearby pasture. We invite you to listen,
relax and remember a way of life that is vanishing from our rural roots.

Dan grew up on a dairy farm on Chipmunk Ridge overlooking the
Coulee region of western WI. Daryl grew up on a dairy farm at Rural
Route 1 in southern MN. Like so many other baby boomers they left the
cows behind and pursued other opportunities. But 40 years later, all
