Many baby boomers left their rural route addresses as they made their
way in the world. But your farm remains a part of who you
are…regardless of your current address. Join Dan and Daryl as they
share tales about growing up down on the farm during those baby
boomer years. Just close your eyes and imagine the smell of fresh cut
hay or feel the softness of a baby chick in your hands. You can hear the
cows as they return from the nearby pasture. We invite you to listen,
relax and remember a way of life that is vanishing from our rural roots.

Dan grew up on a dairy farm on Chipmunk Ridge overlooking the
Coulee region of western WI. Daryl grew up on a dairy farm at Rural
Route 1 in southern MN. Like so many other baby boomers they left the
cows behind and pursued other opportunities. But 40 years later, all

Grab your favorite toy tractor and hook up the wagon or plow. Add a few toy cows, pigs and chickens from the shoebox barn and, you’ve got your own little farm! Today we’re joining John and Pat Klettke, who turned their love of farm toys into an 8’ x 24’ farm showstopper. The diorama showcases 60 plus years of changes on the farm. There’s a machine shed, crops, barns and a rotary milking parlor that actually rotates!

With “Creativity” as his middle name John remembers how they made corn kernel windrows on Mom’s kitchen floor. Turned Pringles cans into silos and chicken waterers into grain bins. Listening to their tales might just have you searching in the attic for that old box of farm toys – waiting in some dark corner. With carpet for roads, grass for haystacks, and a little imagination, we remember playing while growing up, down on the farm!

Farm Diorama

They usually came when you called them—at least on their own terms. Some had familiar names
like Tippy, Toby, or Josie. Others answered to unforgettable monikers like Killer. Whatever they
were called, they were more than just farm animals. Some were part of the family.

Every farm pet had its own personality, quirks, and daily routine. They greeted us after school,
followed us to the barn, curled up on the porch, or ran along with the tractor. And on Chipmunk
Ridge, some lucky cats even had their own seasonal motel!

Today we're sharing stories about the pets that made growing up on the farm a little more
memorable. They may never have been Westminster Kennel Club material, but they were loyal
companions, faithful friends, and an unforgettable part of life down on the farm.

Farm Pets and Pet Names

Today's guest is Vern Johnson, an equipment trader who's worn a lot of hats. From his family's dairy farm—where his dad famously tripled the herd in a single day—to more than 40 years of buying, selling, and trading equipment. Vern has collected stories that are as memorable as the
machines themselves.

He takes us back to the days of corn pickers, four bottom plows and long Iowa road trips. You'll hear about a 600-mile joyride for a swather that ended about 2,640 feet from home. For Vern, it's never just about the equipment—it's about the people you meet, the relationships you build, and showing up every day determined to do the best job you can.
