What if the most dangerous deception in the church is wearing Christian language, quoting Scripture, and calling itself discernment?

In this episode of Faith on the Fringe, Leah and Malaine sit down with Hector Gonzalez, evangelist, founder of Theology Wars, and one of the boldest voices confronting spiritual deception inside modern Christianity today. Hector came to faith at 15 after surviving abuse connected to the church, grew up with Santeria in his family lineage, and has spent years in missions, evangelism, spiritual warfare, and theological training. He brings the kind of perspective this conversation demands: spirit-filled, biblically serious, and unwilling to flatter a broken church system.

Together, they talk about Christian witchcraft, false prophets, spiritual narcissism, religious trauma, charismatic manipulation, the Python spirit in Acts 16, Jezebel, church hurt, Christian deconstruction, and why so many believers can sense something is wrong but do not always have the language to name it.

This conversation is a call to test the fruit, search the Scriptures, and stop confusing supernatural performance with submission to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Key Takeaways

  • False prophets are not always easy to spot, especially when they know how to use Christian language, spiritual authority, and charismatic performance.
  • The Python spirit in Acts 16 gives believers a biblical pattern for testing what sounds true but may be operating from the wrong spirit.
  • Spiritual narcissism thrives when leaders become untouchable, unquestionable, and protected by the very systems they are supposed to shepherd.
  • Church hurt and religious trauma are driving many people into Christian deconstruction, especially when counterfeit spirituality misrepresents Jesus.
  • Charismatic witchcraft is not the same as the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts are real, but they must remain fully submitted to Christ.
  • Healthy leadership welcomes honest questions, biblical accountability, transparency, and correction.
  • Discernment grows through intimacy with the Lord, knowledge of Scripture, and the courage to test the fruit without falling into fear.

Featured Scripture

Acts 16:16-18

“As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.’ And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour.”

Application: The girl in Acts 16 was saying words that sounded true, but Paul still discerned the spirit behind them. That matters deeply in the modern charismatic church. Accuracy alone does not prove purity. Supernatural language does not prove submission. Believers are called to test the spirit, examine the fruit, and stay anchored to the Lord Jesus Christ rather than being moved by gifting, intensity, or platform.

Historical and Theological References

Santeria. A syncretistic spiritual system with roots in Yoruba religion and Roman Catholic imagery, discussed in connection with witchcraft, spiritual warfare, family lineage, and how occult practices can infiltrate Christian spaces.

The Python Spirit. Referenced from Acts 16, where Paul confronts a spirit of divination operating through a slave girl who was saying words that sounded true.

Jezebel Spirit. Discussed in connection with control, domination, seduction, manipulation, and spiritual rebellion inside church leadership and charismatic environments.

The Bereans. Referenced as the biblical model for believers who receive teaching but search the Scriptures for themselves rather than blindly trusting a teacher, pastor, prophet, or platform.

Scriptures for Further Study

Acts 16:16-18. Paul confronts a spirit of divination operating through a slave girl whose words sounded true, but whose source was not holy.

1 Thessalonians 5:23. Paul prays for complete sanctification of spirit, soul, and body, reminding believers that holiness touches the whole person.

Acts 17:11. The Bereans received teaching with eagerness but searched the Scriptures daily to test whether what they heard was true.

Acts 17:28. Paul quotes pagan poetry while preaching in Athens, showing that truth can be engaged thoughtfully without surrendering biblical authority.

Hosea 4:6. The Lord says His people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, exposing the danger of ignorance among those called to know Him.

1 Corinthians 14:26. Paul describes a gathering where believers bring hymns, teachings, revelations, tongues, and interpretations for the building up of the body.

If you have sensed something off in a church, ministry, prophetic environment, or charismatic space, do not bury that check in your spirit.

Take it to the Lord. Open the Word. Test the fruit. Ask better questions. Pay attention to what happens when leadership is challenged, when money is questioned, when repentance is required, and when private character is brought into the light.

The Holy Spirit is not threatened by discernment. Jesus is not offended by honest questions. And the gifts of the Spirit do not need manipulation, performance, or control to prove they are real.
