Having found her feet in freelance journalism without giving in to the temptations of sensational breaking news, she states how free she feels when she is not bound by the editorial processes and policies of the newsroom. 

Safina Nabi is a full-time, independent multimedia journalist from South Asia based in Kashmir. She writes about gender, health, human rights, social justice, development, and the environment. She won the Fetisov Journalism Award and Laadli Media Award in 2023 for her year-long investigation about the property rights of “Half widows” from different parts of Kashmir which raised important questions about the rights of women and the role of government, society, and legal structures when it comes to women and their rights to property in disturbed regions.

Ep. 05 Safina Nabi : Reporting Outside the Newsroom

The fourth episode features Neha Dixit who claims that journalists need their legs more than their brains. As she narrates experiences from sting operations and press releases, she demystifies investigative journalism and reveals how it's not one mysterious tip but rather mundane legwork that breaks the biggest stories. 

Neha Dixit is an Indian freelance journalist covering politics, gender, and social justice. She has been awarded over a dozen awards including the Chameli Devi Jain Award (2016) as well as CPJ International Press Freedom Award (2019). She also serves as visiting faculty for Media Studies at Ashoka University.

After reporting in Kashmir for a year, she completed her Masters in conflict studies and human rights from Utrecht University, Netherlands. At Newslaundry, she covered gender, crime and politics.

Her consistent reporting on gender-based violence in rural India has led to effective police action and justice for survivors. Neetu has over 13 years of experience in rural journalism, and has won the Laadli Media Award eight times for gender sensitive reporting. She also won Chameli Devi Jain Award for outstanding women mediapersons and the Priyanka Dahele Award for promising young journalists in 2020.
