As António Guterres approaches the end of his tenure as United Nations Secretary-General, the question of who comes next comes at a particularly consequential moment for the organisation. The UN is facing financial pressures, growing geopolitical divisions and questions about the strength of multilateralism itself, as countries increasingly assert their sovereignty and, in some cases, retreat from international agreements and institutions.
