Traditionally we’ve measured the performance of the health system machine on hard endpoints such as mortality, and this is particularly so in ICU.
In recent years however, we’ve begun to focus more on the patient experience, including their functional outcomes. Narrative and qualitative research has provided us with a better understanding of the emotional, psychological and physical trauma imposed by critical illness.
Kali Dayton is a nurse practitioner in ICU, and through her podcast “Walking Home from the ICU”, has helped shine the spotlight on this important issue through a series of interviews with survivors of critical illness. She joins Todd on the podcast to share what she's learned.
