Lies and falsehoods at Jerusalem Design Week

"Halasartan" – Stop Cancer – an organization that provides support to young adult cancer patients and survivors, held a special tattoo party in Tel Aviv – bringing top tattoo artists to provide community members with an artistic and personal way to commemorate their journey. Tattoo artist Amit Shamir spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal about the event and its significance.

Cancer survivors mark their journey with ink

The Herzog College English Education Department is hosting a special tribute evening Tuesday, June 20th, to honor the memory of Lucy Dee, who was murdered along with two of her daughters, Maia and Rina, in a terrorist attack in the Jordan Valley this past April. Lucy Dee was a graduate of the Herzog College English Education course, and a beloved English teacher. The tribute evening is taking place in Migdal Oz, and will also be viewable on Zoom. The evening will include tributes from Lucy's colleagues and classmates, pedagogical workshops, and discussion of ways to inspire others to emulate the passion, values and leadership Lucy modeled in her teaching. Herzog College faculty member Dr. Amy Gelbart spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal about the event.

As part of recent events in Israel marking "Blind Day," a day for enhancing awareness and empathy for the blind and visually impaired community, the Knesset launched a new audio guidance system, one of the many accessibility initiatives in use in the parliament complex. The personalized audio wayfinding system is a product developed by Israeli start-up RightHear, which connects a dedicated mobile application to strategically placed wireless beacons in public spaces and accessibility points. The system provides audio descriptions of the environment and directly transmits them to smartphones or tablets, enabling individuals who are blind, visually impaired or who have difficulty orienting themselves, experience the world securely.  Reporter Naomi Segal heard more from Idan Meir co-founder and CEO of RightHear.

Thousands attended the funeral for Rabbi Gershon Edelstein, leader of the haredi Lithuanian community, who died at the age of 100. Edelstein was spiritual leader of the Degel HaTorah political faction and head of the Ponovezh yeshiva in Bnei Brak. Prof. Benjamin Brown, of the Dept. of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Israel Democracy Institute, spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal about Rabbi Edelstein.

After a decade of planning  and three years of construction, the newly renovated Tower of David Jerusalem Museum has opened. The 50 million dollar renewal and conservation project in the ancient citadel brings together ancient and modern, with technology and original artifacts integrated to tell the story of the city. Now designated as the official museum of the capital, the gallery rooms are also completely accessible. KAN's Naomi Segal heard more from Caroline Shapiro, Director of External Affairs at the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum.

Ancient and modern meet at renewed Tower of David Jerusalem museum

Farmers across Israel are suffering from increased violence, theft and vandalism. Most recently, vandals torched the hay barn of a dairy farmer in moshav Nahalal in the Jezereel valley, burning over a million shekels worth of straw and other feed. The organization HaShomer HaHadash aids farmers protect their fields and livestock. They have come to the aide of the dairy farmer in Nahal and are trying to raise funds to buy feed so he can save his herd and farm, founded over 100 years ago. Neta Ben-Barak is a fourth generation dairy farmer and spoke to KAN English about the trials and challenges of making a living from agriculture amid this heightened attacks on Jewish farmers. Vandalism and crime strike Israeli farmers hard

The Bank of Israel's recent interest rate hike -- it's 10th, in the central bank's bid to curb inflation -- has put more strain on mortgage holders as their monthly payments continue to climb. Independent mortgage broker Ross Levin told KAN's Naomi Segal that borrowers can consider refinancing their loans to try to ease the financial burden.

Looking at the current round of fighting between Israel and the Islamic Jihad highlights the effect of attempts being led by Iran to unify fronts against Israel. The Shiite Iran has been backing Islamic Jihad, unlike Hamas, as part of its unity of resistance to surround Israel by a ring of fire and open multiple fronts against the Jewish state from the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Lebanon and Syria.
