Farmers can now secure pricing on up to 150 million kilograms of milk solids, a substantial increase from the previous 75 million kilogram limit. This move provides critical financial predictability during volatile market conditions.

Nearly 3,500 applications were received from 1,778 individual farms, a significant jump from the 965 farms participating last year. Milk supply director Lisa Payne highlighted the programme's importance, noting the dairy commodity market's inherent unpredictability.

Pricing options ranged from $8.09 to $10.10 per kilogram of milk solids. The April and August application windows proved particularly popular, with demand outstripping available allocations. December's allocation saw 8.18 million kilograms of milk solids applied for from 207 farms at a fixed price of $10.10.

Fonterra remains committed to evolving the programme, with Payne promising new features to be announced before the March application window.

 

Swift response to early morning fire at Fonterra’s Te Rapa site

Meanwhile Fire and Emergency responded swiftly to an early morning incident at Fonterra's Te Rapa manufacturing plant north of Hamilton on Tuesday. Multiple emergency response teams arrived at the site shortly after 3am, to discover localized smouldering within one of the plant's critical dryer units.

Eight fire trucks managed to control the situation within a couple of hours, preventing any significant disruption to the dairy processing facility.

Alan Van Der Nagel, Director of New Zealand Manufacturing said that no one was harmed and the entire plant infrastructure remained intact.

Forty-four part-time biosecurity hosts will be stationed at four main international airports, building on last year's successful trial. These hosts will welcome arrivals, manage queues, and provide critical biosecurity guidance to international travelers.

The most significant threats remain unchanged: fresh produce, contaminated camping equipment, soiled outdoor gear, and meat products continue to pose potential risks to New Zealand's agricultural ecosystem. Forestry Minister Todd McClay says the decision will dramatically lower costs for over 4,300 forestry owners across the country, dropping from $30.25 to $14.90 per hectare, a move designed to rebuild confidence in a sector that has faced considerable challenges in recent years. 

McClay emphasized that the reduction represents a commitment to supporting New Zealand's critical forestry industry while maintaining a responsible approach to cost recovery.

A wider review of cost recovery settings is planned for completion in 2026, with a newly established Forestry Sector Reference Group working to increase transparency across ETS registry operations. 

The reduced charges will take effect in January next year, with invoicing to commence in February.

 

FENZ bans fireworks across Mackenzie Basin and Ashburton Lakes

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has placed a temporary ban on fireworks across the Mackenzie Basin and Ashburton Lakes region, running until the end of March next year. The ban covers key areas including Lake Clearwater and Lake Camp.

Mid-South Canterbury District Manager Rob Hands says the land still remains scarred by devastating wildfires, including the major incident at Pukaki Downs last year and the Lake Ōhau fire in spring 2020, which highlights the potential destruction fireworks can cause.

Last week, the entire Mid-South Canterbury District transitioned into a restricted fire season, banning all open-air fires unless a permit is granted through FENZ.

While September and October rainfall totals were the highest on record – with northern Southland recording 188% of long-term averages – the outlook for the coming months suggests a dramatic shift. Niwa predicts temperatures well above normal, with increased likelihood of days exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.

December has already trended drier than average, with potential development of a weak La Niña pattern that could bring significant variability. The forecast suggests more northeasterly winds, potentially creating extended dry spells and challenging conditions for local agriculture.

Winter grazing practices resulted in two confirmed breaches out of 11 complaints. Whitebait stand operators faced scrutiny for improper identification and maintenance, while some industrial consent holders struggled with site-specific environmental conditions.

Environment Southland chairman Nicol Horrell emphasized the nuanced nature of these infringements, noting that many consents involve complex and unique processes. The council has implemented an education-first approach, introducing a 24-hour notice system for dairy discharge consent inspections to foster more constructive conversations between regulators and land managers.

The dairy sector inspection results tell a particularly compelling story. Of 783 discharge consent inspections, 66% were fully compliant, with only 1% showing significant non-compliance – a dramatic improvement from the previous year's 3%. Twenty-five percent demonstrated low-risk non-compliance, and 8% showed moderate issues.

Accessibility remains a core principle of this new system. The method is engineered to be low-cost and completely auditable, utilizing data most farmers already collect through routine record-keeping.

Kiwifruit export revenues are set to exceed $3 billion for the first time, while the horticulture sector as a whole is projected to reach a record $8 billion in exports, representing a robust 12 percent increase.

Meat and wool markets are also showing resilience, with revenues anticipated to rise slightly to $11.4 billion. Global beef supply tightening is working in New Zealand producers' favor, creating opportunities for local farmers.

Forestry is recovering ground, with export revenue expected to rebound 4 percent to $6 billion. Increased engagement from key markets, particularly China, is driving demand for logs and processed wood products.

 

RMA amendment brings relief for primary producers

New Zealand's primary producers are set to see significant regulatory relief with the latest Resource Management Amendment Bill, with farming-focused reforms taking center stage in the proposed legislation.

Farmers will experience immediate benefits through improved farm plan certification processes. The bill introduces more cost-effective approaches by enabling industry organizations to directly deliver audit and certification services. 

Wood processing facilities will now operate with greater certainty, with resource consent applications mandated to be decided within one year. This time-bound commitment eliminates the prolonged uncertainty that has historically hampered agricultural and forestry investments.

RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop explained that these changes are part of a broader strategy to support primary industries, saying they are about making it easier to get things done in New Zealand.

Marine and aquaculture operators will also benefit, with the bill providing more flexibility for marine farms. New provisions will enable easier modifications to existing consent conditions, recognizing the dynamic nature of marine-based primary industries.The amendment addresses longstanding challenges by reducing regulatory overlap between the Resource Management Act and the Fisheries Act 1996. Councils will face clearer constraints on controlling fishing and agricultural activities, particularly regarding biodiversity protection.

The legislation is part of a three-phase plan to overhaul the Resource Management system. The current bill represents Phase Two, with a complete RMA replacement planned for Phase Three. The government aims to create a more responsive regulatory environment that supports economic growth while maintaining environmental considerations.

The bill will also introduce additional changes across infrastructure, housing, and heritage sectors. 

The Resource Management (Consenting and Other System Changes) Amendment Bill is expected to pass into law by mid-2025, with its first reading scheduled for next week.

 

Clandeboye leading Fonterra's emissions reduction drive

Dairy cooperative Fonterra is making a significant stride in emissions reduction, announcing a $64 million project to convert two coal boilers to wood pellets at its Clandeboye site in South Canterbury.

By switching from coal to wood pellets, Fonterra will reduce its overall emissions by nine percent - equivalent to 155,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

Chief Operating Officer Anna Palairet described the project as a critical step in the company's sustainability journey, and is as the largest decarbonisation investment by Fonterra to date..

The initiative is part of Fonterra's commitment to completely exit coal by 2037, building on previous successful boiler conversions at Te Awamutu and Hautapu sites. The project received co-funding from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), highlighting collaborative efforts in industrial emissions reduction.

By September next , the two boilers will be fully operational, with Fonterra confirming plans to continue transitioning remaining boilers at the Clandeboye site.

 

Fire bans for Hawke’s Bay and coastal Wairarapa.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand has implemented total fire bans across several regions, with specific areas in Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa facing extreme fire risks.

In Hawke's Bay, the ban covers Heretaunga-Ahuriri, Tukituki East, Tukituki West, Pōrangahau, and the southern Hawke’s Bay coast. A restricted fire season is in place requiring permits for outdoor fires in Tararua Central, Tararua East, Tararua West, Wairoa Coast, Te Haroto and Esk-Tutaekuri.

Coastal Wairarapa's fire ban encompasses the northern, central, and southern coastal zones, including Aorangi Forest Park and the eastern coastline up to Mataikona. This includes rural areas around Martinborough, Featherston, and Cape Palliser.

The fire bans will remain in effect until conditions improve, with Fire and Emergency continuously monitoring vegetation and weather conditions.

Water quality is getting a multi-stakeholder makeover in the Ōpōtiki district, with a new catchment group emerging. Environmental consultants Allegrow are leading the charge, bringing together Whakatōhea iwi, local growers, and community members.

Project co-ordinator Mel Brown outlined the group's ambitious goals, highlighting a strategic area between Waiotahe River and Torere. The initiative aims to revitalize water ecosystems, with key objectives including native wildlife restoration and improving swimming water conditions.

The group's structure represents a unique model of cooperation, featuring three distinct yet interconnected interest groups: farmers and growers, community representatives, and Whakatōhea iwi members. Currently, around 12 agricultural producers have joined, with Doug Brown from Riverlock Group serving as interim chair.

Brown says their short-term priorities include facilitating communication channels with local and central government, and educating communities about water quality impacts.

Interested local farmers, growers, and community members are being encouraged to engage with the group.

Upcoming meetings with Bay of Plenty regional and Ōpōtiki district councils will further solidify the group's strategic framework and collaborative potential.

Emissions Reduction Plan reveals significant gaps in climate strategy

The government’s latest emissions reduction plan has revealed both progress and persistent challenges in meeting crucial climate targets. The government's strategy moves the country closer to its goals by approximately seven million tonnes of emissions, yet still falls short of the critical emissions budget for 2031-2035 by around nine million tonnes.

Flagship policies like Electrify NZ and plans to install 10,000 electric vehicle chargers by 2030 show minimal impact on emissions over the next five years. Each policy promises only 100,000 to 200,000 tonnes of emissions savings across the entire five-year period, with EV kilometers driven increasing marginally from 9 to 9.2 percent.

More promising emissions-cutting strategies involve tackling organic waste, managing refrigerant gases, and allowing fossil fuel companies to capture and store carbon dioxide underground. 

The comprehensive package, including waste management initiatives and stricter carbon credit controls, is projected to achieve around three million tonnes of emissions savings during 2026-2030. However, a substantial gap remains - 84 million tonnes between New Zealand's expected domestic achievements and its international Paris Agreement target.

Methane reduction targets present another complex challenge. Meeting the 2030 target appears "finely balanced," with projections hovering around the 10 percent reduction goal. By 2050, methane reductions are estimated to be at the lower end of the legal target range.

However, the most impactful policies, such as pricing agricultural emissions, are not expected to have substantial effects until 2030 and beyond.

Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Climate Change Minister Simon Watts have presented conflicting statements regarding international carbon credit purchases, adding further uncertainty to the national climate strategy.

Meanwhile Otago farmer and Groundswell co-founder Bryce McKenzie has launched a scathing critique of the government's latest emissions reduction plan, arguing that the proposed agricultural emissions pricing mirrors the challenges faced under previous governments.

McKenzie warns the plan could drive up food prices while delivering negligible global environmental benefits. The updated strategy, set to introduce agricultural emissions pricing by 2030, includes technological incentives aimed at reducing agricultural carbon output.

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts defends the approach, positioning the plan as a critical pathway to New Zealand's net-zero 2050 target. He argues the strategy can simultaneously protect New Zealand's way of life, maintain an competitive agricultural sector, and meet international climate commitments.

McKenzie challenges this perspective, highlighting New Zealand farmers' existing global leadership in agricultural efficiency. He argues that farmers already possess strong motivations to adopt innovative technologies once they are proven safe, effective, and market-responsive.

The Groundswell co-founder is particularly critical of what he terms a "Farming Tax," warning that emissions pricing could undermine New Zealand's agricultural competitiveness. He argues that reduced local production would simply shift agricultural activity to less efficient international producers, potentially increasing global emissions.

McKenzie is calling for a radical rethink of international trade policies. Instead of imposing internal pricing mechanisms, McKenzie argues politicians should focus on removing trade barriers that would allow New Zealand's lower-emissions food to compete more effectively in global markets.

 

Fed Farmers make formal complaint over bank lending

Federated Farmers has escalated their concerns about New Zealand's banking sector, lodging a formal complaint with the Commerce Commission that challenges the lending practices of major banks.

They are requesting an urgent investigation into what they describe as potentially anti-competitive behavior driven by international climate commitments. 

All five primary agricultural lenders - BNZ, ANZ, ASB, Westpac, and Rabobank - are either direct or indirect members of the Net-Zero Banking Alliance. The objectives of the Bill are to establish a new regulatory regime for gene technology and genetically modified organisms with the aim to enable safe use of the technology, according to the Bill’s accompanying explanatory note.

As expected, the Bill aims to establish a new Gene Technology Regulator as an independent decision maker within the Environmental Protection Authority. The regulator will be supported by a Technical Advisory Committee and a Māori Advisory Committee. The Director-General of the Ministry for Primary Industries will be responsible for compliance, monitoring, and enforcement of the regulatory regime.

A risk tier framework is to be used with four general tiers of risk used in the assessment process to enable proportionate management of risks to human health and safety to the environment. Under the Bill, some gene technologies will be exempt from the regulatory process such as products of editing techniques that result in organisms that cannot be distinguished from those produced by conventional processes.

The new rules will require the regulator to consult the public on draft risk assessment and draft risk management plans for licensed activities unless there has been previous consultation on a similar activity. The regulator will also be required to notify the public of its proposals to declare activities to be non-notifiable, notifiable, or pre-assessed.

A rural community group in Hawke's Bay is taking decisive action to support farmers facing mounting challenges from extreme dry conditions. The Kaweka Community Catchment Collective, spanning over 64,000 hectares across Dartmoor, Rissington, Patoka, and Puketitiri, is hosting a forum tomorrow morning to help prepare for and manage drought conditions.

Coordinator Alice Beamish says the region has experienced 4-5 months of below-average rainfall, with temperatures reaching as high as 37.5 degrees celsius in some areas.

Tomorrow mornings forum at the Puketapu Pub will feature a series of presentations from key support services, including bankers, accountants, livestock agents, veterinarians, and the Rural Support Trust. 

The collective, which was established six months after Cyclone Gabrielle's devastation, receives support from the Ministry of Primary Industries' Community Extension Services. This funding aims to build resilience in local communities, with the drought preparedness forum representing a critical next step in their ongoing support.

New Zealand representative Jack Fagan made a 700-kilometre round trip to win both the open final and the open speed shear, demonstrating the dedication of top shearers in the competitive circuit.

The Whangārei event marks the first of several upcoming shearing competitions in the region. Upcoming shows include the Kaikohe A, P & H Show on January 18, the North Kaipara show at Paparoa on February 1, and the Northern Wairoa Show on February 8. Tomorrow mornings forum at the Puketapu Pub will feature a series of presentations from key support services, including bankers, accountants, livestock agents, veterinarians, and the Rural Support Trust. 
The collective, which was established six months after Cyclone Gabrielle's devastation, receives support from the Ministry of Primary Industries' Community Extension Services. This funding aims to build resilience in local communities, with the drought preparedness forum representing a critical next step in their ongoing support.

Initially successful with 12 pilot farms, the programme will now extend to 100 farms regionally, with ambitious plans to reach 300 farms in the coming years.

McClay explained the programme's multifaceted approach, noting that it enables farmers to enhance agricultural land performance while creating additional revenue streams through carbon credits and timber production. The initiative represents a strategic approach to supporting New Zealand's agricultural sector, and balancing economic gains with environmental sustainability.

Projected benefits of the Land for Life programme are substantial. Economic modeling suggests cumulative economic gains could reach $380 million for participating farmers over three decades. The programme also anticipates significant environmental advantages, including $1.5 billion in avoided costs from reduced landslides and the potential sequestration of 61,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions.

The Minister highlighted the programme's broader implications, emphasizing that this co-investment will help validate and develop a potentially self-funded system.

Water quality improvements and enhanced overall farm resilience are additional key outcomes expected from the Land for Life initiative. 

The expanded Land for Life programme represents an innovative collaboration between government, regional councils, and farmers, providing a promising model for sustainable agricultural development across New Zealand.

A fourth shed, housing another 40,000 chickens, will likely undergo the same process as a precautionary measure, even though initial tests remain inconclusive.

There are no reports of sick poultry nationwide, and biosecurity officials say there is zero threat to food safety or human health.

An unrelated small operation near Dunedin has received a clean bill of health after thorough examinations.

Fonterra signals record milk price

Fonterra's latest milk price forecast could mark a record-breaking milestone for the 2024/25 season. The cooperative has upgraded its midpoint forecast to $10 per kilogram of milk solids, with a potential range spanning $9.50 to $10.50 per kilogram.

Chief Executive Miles Hurrell says compelling global market conditions are driving this positive outlook. Demand recovery in China and continued strong interest from Southeast Asian markets are creating favorable dynamics for our dairy sector. Production challenges in the United States and Europe are simultaneously contributing to a more attractive global dairy landscape.

The company's earnings forecast remains stable, ranging between 40 and 60 cents per share. Fonterra anticipates maintaining underlying operating profit by offsetting higher milk costs through improved sales volumes, strategic product mixing, and pricing adjustments.

The projected milk price reflects global market strength and the continued importance of New Zealand's dairy industry on the world stage.



Milk powder gains highlight latest Dairy Trade Auction

The forecast comes on the heels of a robust Global Dairy Trade auction, where futures market indicators had been signaling potential for this price point, now confirmed by Fonterra's projection.

This weeks auction saw overall prices increasing by 1.2%. This follows a 1.9% climb two weeks ago and an impressive 4.8% jump prior to that.

Whole milk powder recorded a solid 4.1% increase, after previous rises of 3.2% and 4.4% in recent auctions.

Lactose saw the most significant jump, surging 7.7%.  However, several products experienced price declines.

Skim milk powder dropped 1.0%, while anhydrous milk fat dipped slightly by 0.5%. Butter milk powder saw a more substantial decrease of 2.6%, and cheddar prices fell 3.2%, following a similar decline in the previous auction.

Butter experienced the most significant fall, slumping 5.2%. Mozzarella continued its downward trend, sinking 4.5% after a substantial 6.6% drop in the previous auction.



Synlait reaches potential turning point

Synlait Milk has taken significant steps towards stabilizing its operations, with the company reporting its first farmer supplier withdrawing a two-year cessation notice this week. Chair George Adams expressed cautious optimism at this week's annual meeting at its Dunsandel site, describing this as a potential turning point for the dairy processor.

The company has implemented a strategic retention program, offering a 20 cents per kilogram of milk solids payment to encourage farmers to maintain their milk supply. This initiative targets both existing and potential new suppliers, with specific conditions attached to the offer.

Financially, Synlait has reported a net loss of $182.1 million for the financial year, with revenue increasing slightly to $1.64 billion. The company has been working to reset its balance sheet, including a significant capital raise and refinancing its banking facility until 2025.

The processor has made strategic changes, including focusing its North Island site at Pōkeno exclusively on advanced nutrition. Its milk supply forecast currently sits at $9.50 per kilogram of milk solids.

Leadership changes are also in progress. Following the departure of former CEO Grant Watson, the company has engaged recruitment agency Korn Ferry to conduct a global search for a permanent chief executive.



Report shows lamb numbers are down, but the sector is showing resilience

Beef + Lamb New Zealand's latest Lamb Crop Report has revealed a significant reduction in lamb numbers for 2024.

The report shows a decrease of 1.1 million lambs, representing a 5.2% drop from last year's figures. The total estimated lamb crop stands at 19.2 million, with final South Island numbers expected closer to Christmas.

While the North Island experienced excellent lambing conditions, the South Island faced considerable challenges. Wet weather and snowstorms in Southern regions impacted lamb survival, though not as severely as initially anticipated.

The reduced lamb crop translates to a forecast 6.5% decrease in export lamb numbers for the entire season. Interestingly, similar production challenges in Australia might tighten global supply, potentially leading to stronger international market prices.

Processing capacity is set to be significantly affected. Export lamb processing is forecast to drop 11% in the three months leading to Christmas, with stark differences between islands. The South Island expects a dramatic 22% reduction, while the North Island anticipates a modest 2.4% increase.

B+LNZ Chair Kate Acland offered a balanced perspective, highlighting farmers' resilience. Despite challenging conditions, early-season farmgate prices for sheepmeat remain higher than last spring, and cattle prices continue to show strength.

While the numbers present challenges, the tone from industry leaders remains cautiously optimistic about the sector's ability to adapt and overcome.

Federated Farmers welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step to halt the "relentless march" of pine trees across productive farmland. However, the Forest Owners' Association has strongly criticized the policy, arguing it could compromise the country's climate change targets.

Forest Owners' Association Chief Executive Dr. Elizabeth Heeg has characterized the approach as treating rural land management "like it's playing with Lego". She argues the policy is a "blunt tool" that will prevent sufficient tree planting to effectively address climate challenges.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Todd McClay defended the governments approach, emphasizing the policy represents only part of the broader strategy. He suggested an upcoming announcement about tree planting on Crown-owned land with low farming or conservation value, and stressed that farmers can still plant trees.

The minister remains confident New Zealand can meet its 2030 climate targets without purchasing international carbon credits.

Fonterra's latest milk price forecast could mark a record-breaking milestone for the 2024/25 season. The cooperative has upgraded its midpoint forecast to $10 per kilogram of milk solids, with a potential range spanning $9.50 to $10.50 per kilogram.
Chief Executive Miles Hurrell says compelling global market conditions are driving this positive outlook. Demand recovery in China and continued strong interest from Southeast Asian markets are creating favorable dynamics for our dairy sector. Production challenges in the United States and Europe are simultaneously contributing to a more attractive global dairy landscape.
The company's earnings forecast remains stable, ranging between 40 and 60 cents per share. Fonterra anticipates maintaining underlying operating profit by offsetting higher milk costs through improved sales volumes, strategic product mixing, and pricing adjustments.
The projected milk price reflects global market strength and the continued importance of New Zealand's dairy industry on the world stage.
 
Milk powder gains highlight latest Dairy Trade Auction
The forecast comes on the heels of a robust Global Dairy Trade auction, where futures market indicators had been signaling potential for this price point, now confirmed by Fonterra's projection.
This weeks auction saw overall prices increasing by 1.2%. This follows a 1.9% climb two weeks ago and an impressive 4.8% jump prior to that.
Whole milk powder recorded a solid 4.1% increase, after previous rises of 3.2% and 4.4% in recent auctions.
Lactose saw the most significant jump, surging 7.7%.  However, several products experienced price declines.
Skim milk powder dropped 1.0%, while anhydrous milk fat dipped slightly by 0.5%. Butter milk powder saw a more substantial decrease of 2.6%, and cheddar prices fell 3.2%, following a similar decline in the previous auction.
Butter experienced the most significant fall, slumping 5.2%. Mozzarella continued its downward trend, sinking 4.5% after a substantial 6.6% drop in the previous auction.
 
Synlait reaches potential turning point
Synlait Milk has taken significant steps towards stabilizing its operations, with the company reporting its first farmer supplier withdrawing a two-year cessation notice this week. Chair George Adams expressed cautious optimism at this week's annual meeting at its Dunsandel site, describing this as a potential turning point for the dairy processor.
The company has implemented a strategic retention program, offering a 20 cents per kilogram of milk solids payment to encourage farmers to maintain their milk supply. This initiative targets both existing and potential new suppliers, with specific conditions attached to the offer.
Financially, Synlait has reported a net loss of $182.1 million for the financial year, with revenue increasing slightly to $1.64 billion. The company has been working to reset its balance sheet, including a significant capital raise and refinancing its banking facility until 2025.
The processor has made strategic changes, including focusing its North Island site at Pōkeno exclusively on advanced nutrition. Its milk supply forecast currently sits at $9.50 per kilogram of milk solids.
Leadership changes are also in progress. Following the departure of former CEO Grant Watson, the company has engaged recruitment agency Korn Ferry to conduct a global search for a permanent chief executive.
 
Report shows lamb numbers are down, but the sector is showing resilience
Beef + Lamb New Zealand's latest Lamb Crop Report has revealed a significant reduction in lamb numbers for 2024.
The report shows a decrease of 1.1 million lambs, representing a 5.2% drop from last year's figures. The total estimated lamb crop stands at 19.2 million, with final South Island numbers expected closer to Christmas.
While the North Island experienced excellent lambing conditions, the South Island faced considerable challenges. Wet weather and snowstorms in Southern regions impacted lamb survival, though not as severely as initially anticipated.
The reduced lamb crop translates to a forecast 6.5% decrease in export lamb numbers for the entire season. Interestingly, similar production challenges in Australia might tighten global supply, potentially leading to stronger international market prices.
Processing capacity is set to be significantly affected. Export lamb processing is forecast to drop 11% in the three months leading to Christmas, with stark differences between islands. The South Island expects a dramatic 22% reduction, while the North Island anticipates a modest 2.4% increase.
B+LNZ Chair Kate Acland offered a balanced perspective, highlighting farmers' resilience. Despite challenging conditions, early-season farmgate prices for sheepmeat remain higher than last spring, and cattle prices continue to show strength.
While the numbers present challenges, the tone from industry leaders remains cautiously optimistic about the sector's ability to adapt and overcome.

Agriculture and Forestry Minister Todd McClay and Climate Change Minister Simon Watts have unveiled comprehensive measures to protect New Zealand's agricultural production while maintaining emissions reduction strategies.

The new regulations directly address farmers' concerns about large-scale land conversions, implementing key protections that maintain agricultural productivity and provide clarity for landowners. Farmers will now have clear guidelines that prevent wholesale transformation of productive farmland into forestry.

Under the new framework, farmers can plant forestry on up to 25% of their Land Use Classification 1-6 land. An annual cap of 15,000 hectares will be placed on exotic forestry registrations, creating a measured approach to land use transformation.

Todd McClay says these changes deliver on the government’s commitment to protect food production while providing certainty for both farmers and foresters. The reforms tackle previous policies that incentivised widespread forestry conversions, which threaten critical farming landscapes.

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts says the framework creates a balance that supports climate goals as well as supporting the rural economy.

The regulations include strategic considerations for Māori-owned land that align with Treaty obligations, and provide transitional measures for landowners already in forestry conversion processes. 

Beef and Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) Chair Kate Acland says they are delighted to finally see concrete action to address this issue, which is something B+LNZ has been calling for.

The government is also exploring partnerships with the private sector to plant trees on Crown land with minimal environmental or agricultural impact.

Legislation will be introduced next year, with implementation planned for October of 2025.

An independent panel of scientists has delivered critical insights into potential methane reduction strategies, revealing two potential scenarios for achieving no additional warming by 2050. In a globally coordinated climate policy environment, a 24% reduction in biogenic methane emissions would satisfy international objectives. Conversely, in a slower global response, a 14-15% reduction could achieve equivalent climate neutrality.

The approach represents a sophisticated balancing act – acknowledging global climate responsibilities while protecting the economic vitality of New Zealand's agricultural sector. By prioritizing scientific research, technological innovation, and practical implementation, the government aims to position farmers as global leaders in sustainable food production.

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts says the government will take time to thoroughly examine the panel's findings alongside Climate Change Commission recommendations before confirming the final target in the new year.

The government is backing this approach with substantial investment, committing over $400 million in the next four years to develop emissions reduction technologies.



A second egg farm investigated in Otago bird flu outbreak

Biosecurity New Zealand has expanded its response to the ongoing bird flu outbreak in Otago, placing a second poultry farm under restrictions as culling operations continue at the original Mainland Poultry site.

Biosecurity New Zealand's deputy director-general, Stuart Anderson has confirmed a small free-range farm near Dunedin has been issued a precautionary restricted place notice. The farm, which houses approximately 6000 birds, is now under investigation, with initial reports indicating multiple bird deaths.

The new farm is not owned by Mainland Poultry, but Anderson says they are investigating any potential links between the two properties.

At the original Mainland Poultry farm, the mass culling of 80,000 chickens continues using standard industry methods for humane euthanasia.A 10-kilometer buffer zone around the farm has been designated an enhanced surveillance zone, with security personnel monitoring the property.

All poultry exports remain suspended as Mainland Poultry works to eliminate the virus.



Kāinga Ora’s wool carpet snub sparks backlash

Federated Farmers has joined a chorus of condemnation for Kāinga Ora's decision to exclude wool carpets from its national housing procurement.

Meat and Wool Chair Toby Williams has described it as "incredibly disappointing and shortsighted."

The current Request for Proposals explicitly states they are "not looking to procure wool carpet," directly contradicting the National-NZ First coalition agreement that government agencies should prefer woollen products over artificial fibres where appropriate.

Williams claims that Kāinga Ora showed no interest in exploring pricing from wool carpet providers for what would be a significant supply contract.

Greg Smith, CEO of wool carpet manufacturer Bremworth, said that the contract would be "transformative" for the wool sector. He points out that Kāinga Ora owns or manages over 75,000 homes, and a contract of this scale would equate to over a million lineal metres of carpet.

Smith further highlighted the environmental impact, revealing that the current approach involves "importing around 1.7 million kilos of plastic" for synthetic carpet production. 

The tender's specification of nylon carpet only represents "another blow for sheep farmers," who are already struggling to maintain wool as a viable export and domestic commodity.

A powerful pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has been uncovered with an AgResearch study that reveals dairy-beef could slash carbon footprints by up to 48 percent.

The Life Cycle Assessment analysis demonstrates that fast-finishing systems using dairy-sector cattle can dramatically lower agricultural emissions. By processing dairy-beef steers between 10 and 18 months, farmers could achieve a 32-48 percent reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions compared to traditional beef production.

The study examined multiple factors including animal growth rates, feed efficiency, and production processes. Researchers analyzed farm data from both dairy and beef industries, providing a comprehensive view of potential emissions reductions.

AgResearch senior scientist Andre Mazzetto says this approach offers tangible emissions reduction strategies, presenting farmers with a practical climate solution that integrates dairy and beef sectors.

Fonterra's sustainability director Charlotte Rutherford sees this as a major opportunity for New Zealand agriculture, highlighting how targeted genetics and farming systems can drive environmental improvements.

The research suggests a pathway to lower-emission protein production, potentially helping global food producers meet ambitious carbon targets by 2030.

Innovative companies like Alps2Ocean Foods are already exploring these opportunities. Their Mīti product demonstrates how surplus dairy calves can be transformed into high-value, low-carbon protein.
