DMV Spotlight shines a light on Solar Farm Expansion in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve ( Ag Reserve). Guest Steven Findlay, President of the SugarLoaf Citizens Association says while his group is very supportive of solar energy, he has grave concerns about a new Maryland law that expands the land access in the Ag Reserve to Solar developers.
Findlay notes the limited acres that are farmable in the Ag Reserve and raises the red flag that solar development drives up the price of the land and makes it easy for landowners to exit the already struggling farm industry. Findlay also calls into question the expansion of vast solar arrays under state law instead of local county control and says he is worried about the shrinking amount of farmable land and the destruction of the rural landscape.
