DMV Spotlight on 2-1-2026 shines a light on the American Cancer Society’s Annual Statistics Report that finds for the first time, the five year relative survival rate for all cancers combined has reached 70 percent for people diagnoses during 2015 to 2021 in the US. Guest, Dr Stuart Martin, PhD, Deputy Director of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and Chair of the American Cancer Society Board for the Baltimore-DC region.
Dr. Martin notes that 7 in ten people now survive their cancer five years or more. He also points out that survival for certain cancers including breast and prostate cancer have reached nearly 90 percent. Dr. Martin credits research that has led to both earlier detection and more targeted treatment.
