Five words. Lifted from a letter. Turned into a wall between your faith and your vote.

Most Christians can repeat the phrase “separation of church and state.” How many know where it came from?

It isn’t in the Declaration of Independence. It isn’t in the Constitution. It isn’t in the Bill of Rights. It comes from an 1802 letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists, assuring them the government would stay out of their faith. For almost 150 years, courts quoted his full paragraph. Then in 1947, in Everson v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court pulled five words out of that letter and built a new idea on them with no legal precedent behind it. By 1962, prayer was out of public schools. By 1963, the Bible followed.
