Candlelit ballrooms, secret tunnels, grand staircases and gardens glowing in the tropical night became part of a vision that seemed almost too magical to exist.

But behind the beauty was heartbreak, floods, fire, loss and a man who simply refused to stop building hope into the wilderness.
