In this episode of Ceasefire, hosts Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros tackle a topic they admit they rarely cover: knowing when to speak up and when to walk away. Drawing from Proverbs 26:4-5 — where King Solomon seemingly contradicts himself about whether to answer a fool — the hosts explore the art of discernment in conversation and civic engagement.

They work through modern examples (provocative T-shirts, "Karens," social media outrage) and powerful historical parallels: the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, Nazi Germany, the abolitionist movement, and the Challenger disaster. Along the way they discuss the "consensus trap" — what happens when groups suppress dissent — and apply the same principles to a contemporary local issue: flock surveillance cameras.

The episode wraps with a fun book recommendation segment and their usual call to subscribe at boerneradio.com.

Ceasefire - When To Speak and When To Walk Away - 10-24-26

In this episode of Ceasefire, hosts Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros unpack the culture of blame—why we instinctively look for someone to fault after disasters, how it distracts from solutions, and why understanding the other side builds stronger communities. From Hill Country floods and Highway 46 accidents to squeaky-wheel politics and the psychology of cognitive biases, the conversation challenges listeners to shift from finger-pointing to problem-solving.

0:00 Intro & The Concept of Blame — Dale and Ron open the show, jokingly debating who's "to blame" and introducing the day's topic.

0:36 "They Say" & Deferring to Experts — How society defaults to unnamed authority ("they say…") instead of personal experience and observation.

1:30 Blame vs. Solutions — Blaming distracts from finding solutions; the hosts argue for focusing on what to do next rather than who's at fault.

2:24 Hill Country Floods & Risk — Discussion of repeated flooding on July 4th weekends, the balance between personal property rights and public safety, and the impossibility of eliminating all risk.

6:28 Highway 46 Accidents — Fatal accidents on Hwy 46 near Pipe Creek and the rush to blame TxDOT, the City of Boerne, or Kendall County—when driver behavior may be the real cause.

8:09 Blame as a Tool for Coercion — How finger-pointing is sometimes used to pressure authorities into acting, and the role of the "squeaky wheel" in local infrastructure decisions.

9:12 TxDOT's Real Constraints — Understanding that road improvements depend on traffic counts, funding, and state budgeting—not a "body count" threshold.

10:30 Post-Break: What Do We Do About It? — The hosts discuss empathy, perspective-taking, and asking "is what I'm about to say constructive?" before speaking.

11:40 Squeaky Wheels & Civic Surveys — How a small number of survey respondents (≈119) can dictate policy for an entire city, and why leaders must look beyond surveys.

13:46 Cognitive Biases & Blame — Ron connects blame to cognitive fallacies and biases, referencing a deck of cards on the topic.

15:38 The Ultimate Excuse Generator — A lighthearted segment featuring a Mad Libs-style book for generating ridiculous excuses.

17:28 Historical Blame & Personal Responsibility — How people deflect blame onto newcomers or historical groups, and why blame is ultimately a deflection from personal responsibility.

19:33 Driving, Apologies & Trust — Acknowledging our own mistakes—even silently—builds trust, while blame undermines it.

20:58 Wrap-Up — Community functions better when we trust each other; listeners are directed to bernieradio.com for the podcast.

Ceasefire - Who's to Blame 10-17-26

In this episode of Ceasefire, hosts Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros tackle the fundamental definitions of capitalism and socialism. They explore what each system actually means — private/individual ownership vs. collective ownership of the means of production — and unpack common misconceptions that blur the two. Along the way they discuss public roads, free markets, monopolies, crony capitalism, Sweden's economic model, Social Security, Medicaid, state vs. federal accountability, and the historical rise in global life expectancy under capitalism. They close with two book recommendations and a reflection on the nature of power in any political system.

0:00 Intro — Dale and Ron introduce the show's goal: defining capitalism and socialism, and why people often misunderstand both terms.

0:39 Defining Capitalism — Private/individual ownership of property, businesses, and possessions vs. collective ownership. Free markets as a related but distinct concept. The U.S. as "somewhat" capitalist.

2:15 Public Roads vs. Socialism — Are public roads socialist? The hosts debate whether infrastructure equals socialism or is better understood as promoting common welfare and commerce.

3:30 Defining Socialism — Collective ownership of the means of production. The hosts distinguish socialism from welfare states and safety nets.

4:20 Historical Context: Charters & Corporations — Early America's government-chartered private companies for roads and canals, and how those charters evolved into modern corporations.

5:47 TxDOT vs. County Road Maintenance — A local example: TxDOT hires contractors while Kendall County uses its own crews. Who owns the "means of production" for road work?

6:55 Free Markets ≠ Capitalism — You can have free markets under socialism. Many complaints about "capitalism" (monopolies, cronyism) are actually caused by government intervention.

8:03 "Adjective Capitalism" — War capitalism, crony capitalism — the hosts argue that tacking negative concepts onto "capitalism" misattributes problems that predate and exist independently of it.

8:40 Industrialization & Child Labor — Capitalism gets blamed for pre-existing ills like child labor, even though rising living standards under capitalism eventually helped end those practices.

9:30 Break

9:44 Socialist Countries List — Who's actually socialist? Sweden is frequently cited but is capitalist with a strong safety net. Many formerly socialist countries (Hungary, Albania, Bulgaria, Somalia, Congo, Angola) are no longer.

11:03 Sweden Deep Dive — Sweden's free markets fund its social services. They've had to pull back some services due to cost. Smaller countries have more accountability.

13:00 Social Security: Investment or Insurance? — Republicans view it as an earned right, like an IRA, but it's actually a social insurance program paying out far more than most people put in.

13:37 Accountability & Scale — In a large country like the U.S., accountability for social programs is dispersed across 50 states and a vast geography, unlike smaller nations.

14:48 Medicaid: State vs. Federal — California's Medicaid differs from Texas's. The hosts argue for devolving social services to the state level for better accountability.

15:20 Devolution Dream — Ron's soapbox: all social services should be state-run and state-funded. Let states compete.

16:18 State Competition & Migration — States with high benefits and high taxes (California) drive people and corporations to states like Texas. Fear of competition fuels the federal-vs-state debate.

17:39 Jefferson's Evolution — Jefferson envisioned an agrarian economy but changed his mind near death as industrialization clearly benefited people.

17:51 Life Expectancy Under Capitalism — Global life expectancy rose from ~31 years (1900) to 72.6 years (2020) — a direct benefit of capitalist systems.

18:29 Third World Exploitation — Mining of lithium and cobalt for iPhones and EVs. The hosts note these countries are largely socialist, and exploitation predates industrialization.

19:26 "Are you going to turn in your iPhone?" — The hosts challenge critics to consider what they'd give up to avoid the systems they criticize.

20:08 Book Recommendations — The Triumph of Economic Freedom by Phil Gramm (myths of capitalism) and The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek (the path to oppression).

21:14 Hayek on Power — People drawn to power will always seek leadership positions, regardless of the political system. Socialism amplifies this danger; a federalist republic has built-in limits.

22:27 Closing Thoughts — Private power (Bill Gates, Musk) can't force you to do anything; government power can. The hosts sign off and direct

Ceasefire - Capitalism vs Socialism 10-10-26

Dale and Ron explore what "finding common ground" really means — starting with a personal story about Dale's mom sitting through a Cinderella music video she hated, not because she liked the band, but because she was trying to connect with her son. That sparks a wide-ranging conversation about the difference between common ground and compromise, how listening precedes understanding, the role of conflict in sharpening our thinking, political purity tests vs. coalition-building, whether government is too sprawling to find agreement, and even a playful plan to sneak a Star Trek figurine into their Star Wars-filled studio. They wrap with a book recommendation: Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People.

0:00 Intro — Dale and Ron introduce the topic: finding common ground

0:14 Dale's story: watching MTV's Top 20 countdown in college, mom walks in during Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got"

1:33 Mom critiques the band's look — then surprises him by calling it "a beautiful song" and breaks down the composition

2:36 Years later, Dale realizes mom was trying to relate to him — she thought he liked Cinderella (it was Led Zeppelin)

2:58 Dale's reframe: maybe finding common ground isn't agreement — it's stepping onto someone else's ground

4:21 Ron's counter: common ground is finding that sliver of genuine agreement (the death penalty as an example)

5:10 Death penalty discussion — Dale and Ron find they actually agree on self-defense exceptions

7:53 "Some people just need killing" — finding common ground on extreme cases

8:27 Sacrifice vs. compromise: are they the same? Ron says no — common ground is where both agree; compromise is yielding

10:31 Civility begins with listening, not necessarily with finding agreement — understanding comes first

12:01 Thomas Sowell: "There are no solutions, only trade-offs" — listening leads to understanding, then common ground, then compromise

12:41 Taylor Swift story: Dale's French exchange student insists he listen to Taylor Swift — he remembers his mom's lesson and obliges

14:29 Dale admits he likes "Shake It Off" — common ground with Taylor Swift, one song at a time

15:38 Ron: it's okay for laws and ideas to be in conflict — conflict makes us think

17:38 Ronald Reagan's "big tent" — building coalitions with people who aren't perfectly aligned; both parties now do purity tests

19:12 Small government argument: fewer focus areas = more common ground. Dale's school board experience as proof

20:32 Playful tangent: sneaking a Captain Kirk figurine into the Star Wars studio

21:29 Book recommendation: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

22:01 Closing thoughts — seeking others' perspective in sales and life; sign-off

Ceasefire - Finding Common Ground 10-3-2026

Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros host a wide-ranging conversation on what prosperity really means — and why it's not the same as wealth. Starting from the idea that words change meaning over time, they explore prosperity as an active, ongoing process: the foundation for future growth, upward potential, and the pursuit of dreams. Using analogies like paved driveways, curbs, and sidewalks, they show how infrastructure reflects a community's vitality. They contrast economically wealthy but stagnant places (like Europe) with poorer communities that are actively building and growing. The discussion touches on education and parent involvement as pillars of social prosperity, the American dream of each generation doing better than the last, how immigration fuels American prosperity culture, and the challenge of raising kids who learn to strive in comfort. They close with book recommendations — Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover — and signs of a thriving community: a bookstore, community radio, and a local newspaper.

0:00 Welcome & Why Definitions Matter — Intro to the show and how word meanings shift over time (e.g., "awful" once meant awe-inspiring).

2:02 Prosperity vs. Wealth — Why the two words exist separately; Dale's gravel-to-paved driveway analogy.

3:07 Prosperity as the Foundation for Growth — Prosperity is the ability to pursue your next dream; it never ends.

5:51 Upward Potential & Social Prosperity — Ron defines prosperity as upward potential; civic participation as a pillar.

7:44 Growth vs. Stagnation — Communities that stop growing lose prosperity; construction stopped = stagnation.

8:23 The American Dream & Modern Prosperity — Adaptability, change, and the fading belief that kids will do better than their parents.

10:08 Commercial Break — Brief station break.
10:30 Education & Community Culture — BISD outperforms despite lower spending; it's culture and parents, not money.

Ceasefire - What Is Prosperity 9-26-26

Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros ("Ceasefire") discuss the importance of guardrails — structures that limit power and prevent overreach — across government, business, and culture. They cover checks and balances, the 17th Amendment's effect on the Senate, city government accountability tools (Open Meetings Act, initiative/referendum/recall), and the risks businesses take when they abandon neutrality for political causes (Nike, health insurers, bookstores). They also touch on government agency mission creep (NASA vs. NOAA, food stamps vs. Agriculture), military branch consolidation debates, and close with reflections on America's "live and let live" culture — plus a quick book recommendation (Dungeon Crawler Carl).

0:00 — Intro: What are guardrails?

1:29 — Staying in your lane: businesses and politics (Nike, bookstores)

3:33 — Government guardrails: checks and balances

4:23 — The Senate, the 17th Amendment, and lost state power

6:56 — Local accountability: Open Meetings Act, walking quorums

9:20 — Citizen guardrails: initiative, referendum, recall

11:03 — Break / laws that overreach: doctors asking about guns

14:10 — Business and politics revisited: insurance, NASA vs. NOAA, agency mission creep

17:22 — Outside pressure on institutions; military branch consolidation debate

20:48 — Cultural guardrails: live and let live in America

23:29 — Book pick: Dungeon Crawler Carl

24:58 — Wrap-up

Ceasefire - Importance Of Guardrails 9-19-26

This episode of Ceasefire (Dale Adams & Ron Cisneros) explores the difference between being a spectator and being a citizen in modern American society, arguing that technology has made people more connected but less civically engaged.

Americans have shifted from active citizens to passive spectators, despite unprecedented technological connectivity

Referenced Theodore Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena" speech to contrast those who act vs. those who criticize from the sidelines

Discussed the decline of community organizations (Kiwanis, Rotary, bowling leagues) and mutual accountability

Used the local debate over Flock cameras as a case study: people demand solutions but won't take personal responsibility (locking cars, removing valuables) or get involved in local government

Argued society has shifted from "achievement-based" to "entertainment-based," where people watch and record problems rather than solve them

Applied a "tool vs. crutch" framework to modern conveniences (car lane-assist, safety features) that reduce personal skill and autonomy

Closed with a call to action: engage in small ways — attend a city council or school board meeting, pick up a stray shopping cart — rather than waiting to become fully engaged

Recommended a Joan of Arc biography as an example of civic engagement, followed by a plug for the Boerne farmers market and Baron's Star Wars collection

Timeline

0:00 — Intro: framing the spectator vs. citizen topic

1:49 — Theodore Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena" quote

3:22 — Decline of community/service organizations

5:14 — Rubbernecking analogy for spectator behavior

6:33 — Achievement-based vs. entertainment-based society

7:50 — Break

8:08 — Return: "theater" analogy, stage vs. audience

9:31 — Flock cameras / personal accountability debate

12:13 — Self-governance and avoiding becoming a target

14:19 — "Why We Drive" book: safety features making drivers worse

16:33 — Tool vs. crutch framework

18:02 — Call to action: small steps toward civic engagement

19:34 — JFK quote and closing thoughts

20:06 — Book recommendation: Joan of Arc biography

Ceasefire - Being the Audience 9-12-26

Hosts Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros explore moral relativism vs. moral absolutism — debating whether fairness is innate or taught (using a chocolate-chip-cookie thought experiment and a fair-trading otter), where morals, values, and ethics differ, whether religion is required for morality, and how the growth of laws has made society lose sight of natural law. They close with a provocative thought experiment about left-handedness being deemed "immoral," a critique of how environmental and drug-legalization debates get mislabeled as moral issues, and a book recommendation on discretion and fewer rules.

Ceasefire - Moral Relativism 9-5-26

Dale Adams and Ron Cisneros dig into the philosophy and practice of crime and punishment — a follow-up to their Eighth Amendment episode. They compare punishment systems across cultures (Singapore's caning, Norway and Japan's rehabilitation models, Zimbabwe's "instant justice"), debate whether certainty of getting caught deters crime more than harsh punishment, and discuss surveillance (flock cameras) versus personal responsibility for crime prevention in Boerne, Texas. The conversation moves into crimes of passion and vigilante justice, referencing real cases, before wrapping with book recommendations (Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky and A Quest for Cosmic Justice by Thomas Sowell) and a closing debate on freedom versus security.
