Sibel: Caring for her adult son as a single parent and solo carer

View descriptionShare

Sibel's life took an unexpected turn when her son Ethan contracted pneumococcal meningitis at just two years old, leaving him with an acquired brain injury. Now twenty one years old, Ethan defies expectations and thrives despite his disabilities.

Sibel has faced challenges along the way from navigating the complexities of the NDIS to grappling with her own personal struggles.

As carers, we're seen as informal supports. Everything outside of that is a formal support which would be paid support workers. My mind still grapples with this.

It's very hard for somebody going through the day-to-day struggles of caring for someone with a disability to be considered 100% as an informal support.

Care to Share is an Impact Studios podcast hosted by Prudence Granger, Carer-in-Residence for the Carer Knowledge Exchange.

It features open and honest conversations with carers discussing the challenges, roadblocks, and joys of caring.

  • Produced by Siobhan Moylan.
  • Sound Design by Melissa May.
  • Impact Studios Executive Producer is Sarah Gilbert.

The Carer Knowledge Exchange brings together carers, former carers, researchers, policy makers and practitioners to share their knowledge and learn from each other, improving outcomes for carers by connecting research to practice.

The project is a partnership between Carers NSW and the Institute for Public Policy and Governance at the University of Technology Sydney, and is proudly funded by the NSW Government. Find out more at www.carerknowledgeexchange.com.au.
