South Africans are reliant on credit and payment options in order to afford things such as school clothes, small appliances, and other household necessities, and Buy Now Pay Later platforms have given them an affordable alternative to taking out a store account or a loan from a lender or financial institution. But there is also a danger as these platforms do not cross-reference each other to ensure that the client isn’t overindebted, and this could lead to scenarios where account holders could soon find themselves overextended and unable to keep up with their payments and start to incur heavy penalties.
