Kyle Shepherd speaks to Lester Kiewit about his lifelong connection to the late Abdullah Ibrahim and the profound influence the jazz legend had on his musical journey. Shepherd’s mother, classical violinist Michelle Shepherd, toured with Ibrahim in the 1990s and managed his M7 Music School in Cape Town, giving Kyle an early and personal connection to Ibrahim’s music. Shepherd reflects on growing up around that music, his journey from classical violin to jazz piano, and his upcoming tribute with the Xahuri Trio at the Baxter Theatre.
