The government in Zambia has embarked on a countrywide exercise of removing Street Vendors from their trading places to go in markets and stores, saying they have occupied the streets illegally.
Last month, about 8 - thousand street vendors from the Central Business District of Lusaka were first to be chased and the cleanup exercise on Tuesday 1st August 2023 saw riots breaking out in Central Province' Capital, Kabwe Town, with properties looted and damaged.
Meanwhile, 2- hundred and 50 shops and stores at a Market established under the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) area, called COMESA Market, that houses traders from different countries, are set to be demolished come.
