Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe starts the circulation of newly designed ZiG banknotes

View descriptionShare

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has started nationwide circulation of newly designed ZiG banknotes, marking a key step in Zimbabwe's ongoing currency reform efforts.

The central bank says the new ZWG notes, branded the "Big Five" series, feature improved durability, enhanced security elements, and wildlife imagery aimed at strengthening national identity. However, the rollout comes at a time when public confidence in the local currency remains fragile, with the US dollar continuing to dominate everyday transactions, particularly within informal markets.

Thami Ngubeni spoke to Independent policy researcher, Kevin Tutani.
