Madagascar declares two‑week nationwide state of energy emergency amid severe fuel shortages

View descriptionShare

Madagascar has declared a two‑week nationwide state of energy emergency amid severe fuel shortages caused by the war involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The presidency said the decision was taken following Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, amid fears that the situation could lead to public disorder.

Several African governments have responded to surging global oil prices, driven by the conflict involving Iran, by implementing sharp fuel‑price increases, energy‑saving measures or electricity rationing, among other interventions.

Thami Ngubeni spoke to Madagascar‑based Lawyer and Analyst, Advocate Toki Ramilison.
