Consumers are increasingly at risk of cybercrime and scams while shopping online over the festive seasons

View descriptionShare

As festive spending peaks, young South Africans are increasingly at risk of cybercrime, often falling for unsafe links and scams while shopping online. This is according to Cybercrime expert Craig Pedersen, who warns that no one is too smart to be scammed, as fraudsters use tactics like SIM swaps, phishing links, and deepfake technology to steal personal information.

In Africa, the 2021 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report estimated the financial impact of cybercrime in the region exceeded $4 billion US dollars, representing approximately 10 percent of Africa's total GDP. The challenge has only grown in volume, impact, and complexity since then.

Cybercrime expert Craig Pedersen spoke to our reporter Lebogang Mabange.
