RELTALIATION OR REFORM? Democrats Push to Cut Judicial Retirement Age After Supreme Court Blocks Redistricting Plan

View descriptionShare

In response to its redistricting ruling, Democrats in the Virginia General Assembly have floated a proposal to lower the mandatory retirement age for Virginia Supreme Court justices to 54, a drastic change from the current age of 73. This would force multiple current justices off the bench immediately, allowing the Democratic‑controlled legislature to replace them. The timing is not subtle — it comes days after the state Supreme Court struck down a Democratic‑backed redistricting amendment.
