GOV. GAVIN NEWSOM: Democracy at a Crossroads Speech

View descriptionShare

In his “Democracy at a Crossroads” speech, California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned what he called President Donald Trump’s “authoritarian overreach” in deploying federal forces and commandeering California’s National Guard without state consent. Newsom described mass immigration raids and military presence in Los Angeles as a direct assault on democratic norms and civil liberties. He warned that “other states are next” and urged Americans to resist complicity through silence. Emphasizing that “the most important office in a democracy is citizen,” Newsom called for civic engagement to defend constitutional rights and oppose what he termed a dangerous erosion of American democracy.
