Ciudad Juárez in the 1990s was one of the most dangerous places on earth, and former DEA Special Agent Sal Martinez was sent across the border when few others would go. In this episode of Border Static: NARC Agent Stories, Sal opens up about working alongside Mexican federal police, facing cartel intimidation, witnessing corruption up close, and surviving life-or-death moments while trying to disrupt the Juárez Cartel.

From illegal wiretaps and brutal interrogations to cartel-controlled streets, political corruption, and close calls with AK-47s, Sal shares the raw truth about what it meant to operate in dangerous territory with limited backup and no guarantees. He also reflects on the complicated cost of fighting the drug war, the betrayal he later experienced, and how his journey eventually led him to help people as a bail bondsman.

Undercover in Juárez: Sal Martinez on Cartels, Corruption & the Wildest DEA Years

Before Sal Martinez became a DEA Special Agent, he spent years on the streets as a Texas DPS trooper, where some shifts went from routine to life-or-death in seconds.

In this episode of Border Static: NARC Agent Stories, Sal takes us inside two encounters he never forgot.

First, a quiet cup of coffee turns into a high-speed pursuit of a stolen beige pickup truck. At speeds reaching roughly 120 MPH, Sal rides shotgun with a department-issued 12-gauge, eventually firing at the truck’s tires as officers race to stop the driver before someone is killed. The chase ends after a dangerous maneuver sends both vehicles spinning off the highway.

Then, years later on a dark Friday night in El Paso, a suspected DWI stop becomes a physical fight on the side of the road. Sal is alone, exhausted, unable to call for backup, and unsure whether he will be able to overpower the driver.

These are not Hollywood stories. They are firsthand accounts of fear, adrenaline, judgment, survival, and the emotional reality behind the badge.

120 MPH, a Shotgun & a Fight for Survival | Sal Martinez’s Police Stories

In this episode of Border Static: NARC Agent Stories, former DEA Special Agent and bail bondsman Sal Martinez looks at the harsh legal consequences young adults can face over vape pens, THC products, and confusing drug laws in Texas.

Sal shares the story of a vape shop raid where police confiscated merchandise, but the part-time employee working that day was arrested and given a $60,000 bond. From bond fees and vehicle towing to job loss, attorney costs, court delays, and the emotional weight of a felony arrest, Sal explains how one nonviolent charge can follow someone for years.

The episode also turns personal as Sal welcomes his son Vincent to discuss why young people vape, peer pressure, music, growing up, and the lessons Sal hopes the next generation remembers before one bad decision becomes a lifelong burden.

Vape Pen Felony? A $60,000 Bond and the Cost of One Arrest | Border Static

Former DEA Special Agent Sal Martinez takes listeners inside one of the most dangerous undercover operations of his career.

After successfully fooling the Juárez Cartel during a previous controlled delivery, Sal and his team were trusted with an even bigger assignment: transport 200 kilos of cocaine from El Paso to Riverside, California, hidden inside sealed 55-gallon oil drums.

But the operation quickly became a pressure cooker.

A stranger nearly exposed Sal’s identity inside a Walmart. A cartel operative inspected Sal’s Glock and pointed it directly at his head. The transport truck broke down in the Arizona desert, forcing the agents to improvise with a dirty U-Haul van. Then, after the cocaine reached a stash house in California, a surveillance mistake allowed more than 100 kilos to disappear.

Sal reveals how undercover agents maintain their stories, earn the trust of violent traffickers, make decisions without an instruction manual, and continue operating when one wrong answer could mean death.

This is a true story of deception, controlled delivery tactics, cartel transportation networks, courage under pressure, and the unforgiving reality of the drug war.

200 Kilos of Cocaine and a Gun to His Head | Border Static: NARC Agent Stories

When a police officer or federal agent fires a weapon, the public often sees only a few seconds of footage and a flood of instant opinions. But what happened before the shooting, and whether the threat was truly immediate, can completely change the legal picture.

In this episode of Border Static: NARC Agent Stories, former DEA Special Agent Sal Martinez breaks down the complicated realities surrounding deadly force. Using scenarios involving ICE operations, fleeing drivers, vehicle pursuits, armed robberies, civilian intervention, and a controversial San Antonio police shooting, Sal explains why these cases are rarely as simple as right versus wrong.

The central question is not whether someone disobeyed an officer or attempted to escape. It is whether that person presented an immediate and significant threat of serious bodily injury or death. Sal also challenges poor tactical decisions, including officers unnecessarily positioning themselves in front of vehicles and creating avoidable deadly encounters.

This episode explores:
When deadly force may be legally justified
Why officers cannot shoot someone merely for fleeing
How vehicles can become deadly weapons
The difference between enforcement and punishment
Why a gun should never become a disciplinary tool
The legal and emotional consequences of intervening in a violent crime
How incomplete footage and rushed media coverage can distort public understanding
Why situational awareness may protect you and the people around you

Sal also shares stories from his years as a Texas state trooper and DEA agent, including the difficult decisions officers and armed civilians may face within seconds.

Border Static presents real law-enforcement experiences, difficult questions, and the gray areas rarely captured in a twenty-second news clip.

Would You Bond Them Out? Inside Sal Martinez’s High-Risk World of Bail Bonds

In this episode of Border Static: NARC Agent Stories, former DEA Special Agent Sal Martinez takes listeners inside one of his most dangerous long-term undercover roles: posing as a drug transporter for the Juarez Cartel.

Sal breaks down how a confidential informant, a DEA-controlled warehouse in El Paso, a beat-up Peterbilt truck, and a load hidden inside oil drums became part of a high-risk operation stretching from Texas to Charlotte, North Carolina. From Pizza Hut parking lot surveillance to cartel heat runs, warehouse inspections, an 18-wheeler packed for transport, and a controlled delivery that led to arrests at an isolated farmhouse, this episode reveals the patience, strategy, and nerve required to keep a major cartel investigation alive.

This is not a quick bust story. This is the chessboard behind cartel investigations, where one wrong move could burn the case, expose an informant, or cost lives.

If you like true crime, law enforcement stories, border history, or real narc tales — this is must-watch content.

Undercover DEA Buy-Bust in 1990s Juarez: Inside a Real Heroin Deal

In this episode of Border Static, former DEA Special Agent Sal Martinez asks you to do something most people won’t: block out your own life for a few minutes and truly imagine what it feels like to have nothing.

No running water. No electricity. No job. No hope. Just a cardboard box or tin shack, constant hunger, and the daily humiliation of begging for work that never comes. Sal walks you through the brutal decision to leave everything behind, the dangers of the journey north, the coyotes, the river crossings, and the constant fear of being caught once you finally make it to the other side.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about people.

Sal shares what he actually saw on the ground in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso — the difference between human smuggling and human trafficking, why walls and more agents alone will never stop determined migrants, and how mass deportations are already affecting American farms, restaurants, and factories. He also opens up about personal moments most agents never talk about, including the time Border Patrol agents stopped him as a teenager in El Paso and accused him of being undocumented.

The episode closes with a challenge: Can we raise our emotional intelligence enough to see the human being before we see the label?

If you’ve only heard one side of the immigration conversation, this one will make you stop and think.

Border Static airs Saturdays at 2:30 PM Central on 930 AM The Answer. New episodes drop on YouTube right after the broadcast.

Sal’s memoir, NARC: Convictions of an Undercover Agent, is available now on Amazon.
